Peoria Rivermen News Release
Brett Sterling's hat trick included the game-winning goal in overtime as the Chicago Wolves snuck past the Peoria Rivermen 4-3 on Thursday night at Allstate Arena.
Sterling's wrist shot beat Chris Beckford-Tseu on the blocker side with 29 seconds left in overtime on a feed from Joey Crabb to win the game for the Wolves (17-2-1-0), who also received a stellar performance in net from Kari Lehtonen.
The first period featured two goals coming just eight seconds apart, one for each club. Sterling opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the year at 6:14, tipping home a cross-crease pass from Jason Krog and Jesse Schultz to make it 1-0 Wolves.
Peoria (8-7-1-2) returned the favor immediately off the next faceoff, with Chris Porter finding Yan Stastny streaking down the slot with a feed from the right wing to tie the game. Stastny's wrist shot beat Kari Lehtonen past the left pad for his third goal of the year at 6:22 to wrap the scoring in the opening frame.
Jean-Guy Trudel bumped the Rivermen ahead in the game when he tipped home a Mike Glumac shot on the power play at 13:57 of the second period. The goal was Trudel's fifth of the year and fourth on the man advantage, with Nicholas Drazenovic getting an assist as well on the play.
Sterling's second of the night and Steve Martins' eighth of the year both came as unassisted goals just under four minutes apart early in the third period to vault the Wolves back into the lead.
With time winding down, the Rivermen used the extra attacker to finally punch home a loose puck past Lehtonen, who had made several spectacular saves up until that point of the contest to maintain the Wolves' lead. Julian Talbot jammed home the disc at 19:40 from Ryan Glenna and Micki DuPont to tie the game and force overtime.
Lehtonen stopped 30 Rivermen shots to earn the win, his second straight on a conditioning assignment with the Wovles. Beckford-Tseu made 22 saves in the loss for Peoria. The Rivermen finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while Chicago was blanked in four tries.
The Rivermen now head to Houston to battle the Aeros tomorrow at 7:35 pm. Pre-game coverage of the contest begins at 7:05 pm with Tom Callahan on your Home for Rivermen Hockey, 96.5 ESPN Radio.
