Wolves Mannino Named AHL Goaltender Of The Month
February 1, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
Chicago Wolves goaltender PETER MANNINO has been named the Reebok/AHL Goaltender of the Month for January.
MANNINO backstopped Chicago to six wins in seven starts during the month of January (6-1-0) and accrued a 1.28 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage in those outings. He held opponents to two or fewer goals in all seven of those matchups, which includes posting his first shutout of the season on Jan. 29, with 32 saves against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Overall, the 25-year-old netminder - who allowed only nine goals on 212 shots he faced in January to help Chicago surge to an 11-2-0-1 mark in 14 outings, the team's best month of the season - has posted a 13-3-0 mark in 18 appearances, and has allowed two or fewer goals in 15 of those outings. He leads all AHL netminders with a 1.76 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage this season.
The Farmington Hills, Mich., native, who set a career-high with a five-game winning streak from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2, is in the midst of his second five-game win streak, dating back to Jan. 13. He earned AHL Player of the Week honors earlier this month, after posting a 1.30 goals-against average and .962 save percentage while backstopping the Wolves to three wins in three games with 100 saves on 104 shots from Dec. 30 to Jan. 2.
Last year, the University of Denver graduate made his professional debut and backstopped 34 matchups for the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, posting a 17-12-2 record, 2.94 goals-against average and .900 save percentage. He also made his National Hockey League debut in three games with the New York Islanders, notching a 1-1-0 record with a 4.52 goals-against average and .870 save percentage, which includes earning his first career NHL victory in his first NHL start, when he turned aside 40 of 42 shots against the Chicago Blackhawks on March 15.
In recognition of his achievement, MANNINO will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Wolves home game. The Wolves travel to British Columbia this week for a pair of matchups with the Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Thu., Feb. 4 at 9:30 p.m., and Fri., Feb. 5 at 9:30 p.m.
