
'Wolves Drop Slugfest In Altoona 9-7

The SeaWolves fell to the Altoona Curve, snapping a three-game winning streak on Saturday night, 9-7, at Blair County Ballpark. The loss snapped Erie's seven-game road winning streak, which was the longest road win streak in the last eight seasons.
Altoona struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Thad Weber. Jim Negrych led off with a single and was doubled home by Josh Harrison for a 1-0 lead. Alex Presley then doubled home Harrison for a 2-0 lead. Miles Durham singled to put runners on the corners. Chase d'Arnaud singled home Presley and an error in right by Josh Burrus allowed Durham to score making it 4-0 Curve. Altoona would add two more runs on a single by Gorkys Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Negrych.
The SeaWolves clawed their way back against Altoona starter Tim Alderson. In the fourth, Michael Bertram singled with two outs and was doubled home by Cale Iorg making it 6-1.
In the fifth, the 'Wolves knocked Alderson out of the game plating three runs making it a 6-4 game. Burrus led off with a single and Andy Dirks doubled putting runners on second and third for Wilkin Ramirez. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to right, plating Burrus for Erie's second run. Cesar Nicolas doubled home Dirks and Bertram singled home Nicolas cutting the Curve lead.
In the seventh, Erie made it a one-run game against reliever Dustin Molleken. Dirks led off with a double and his third hit of the game. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Nicolas sacrifice fly to make it 6-5.
The Curve plated three in the bottom of the seventh to go back ahead by four at 9-5. A lead that Erie would not be able to overcome.
In the eighth, Bertram led off with a solo home run for his third hit of the game and second long ball of the season against reliever Jeff Seus to make it 9-6. With two outs, Justin Henry singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Burrus singled to left, scoring Henry making it 9-7. The 'Wolves would get no closer as Altoona brought in closer Daniel Moskos to get the final out of the eighth. Moskos allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the ninth but battled out of the jam, picking up his seventh save.
Weber (1-3) took the loss for the 'Wolves going 6.2 innings, allowing a season-high nine runs on 13 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Erie and Altoona play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark...2:00 First Pitch. Lefty Andy Oliver (2-1, 4.97 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Rudy Owens (3-0, 2.83 ERA).
