Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
HARRISBURG, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels used superior pitching and a solo-home run from Michael Ambort to down the Harrisburg Senators, 1-0, on Saturday night at Metro Bank Park. The Senators sent just one over the minimum to the plate as they were one-hit by Richmond as the Flying Squirrels claimed the series with their fifth shutout of the season.
Ambort's blast came with two outs recorded in the top of the eighth inning as he hooked a low-flying solo-home run off of reliever Yunior Novoa into the bleacher seats in left field. His first home run of the season was the only tally recorded in the low-scoring affair. The loss was hung on Novoa (0-3), his third of the season.
Pitching dominated the ballgame, as starters and right-handers David Mixon for Richmond and Brad Meyers for Harrisburg traded scoreless innings through the first three innings. Meyers struck out six over three innings, while Mixon faced the minimum through his first three innings.
Meyers worked two more scoreless innings before calling it a night after five. He struck out nine, while allowing just four hits, but didn't factor in the decision. Ultimately, Harrisburg pitchers struck out 15 Flying Squirrels, establishing a new franchise-record in the department for Richmond.
Mixon did him two better, facing just one over the minimum in seven innings of near perfect service. He matched a season-high for a Squirrels hurler, striking out eight, while walking one and allowing just one hit. Mixon (3-1) was the rightful winner, turning in his second scoreless seven-inning outing of the season.
Tony Pena Jr. came out to lock down the win for Richmond. He turned in two perfect innings of relief for his fourth save of the season, retiring all six batters he faced and recording a pair of strikeouts.
The third and final game of the three-game series is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at Metro Bank Park. The Mother's Day matchup will feature LHP Craig Clark (1-2, 4.63) making the start for Richmond against RHP Jeff Mandel (0-4, 4.21) for Harrisburg.
