New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain's Deolis Guerra turned in a strong starting effort but it was erased by another faulty ninth inning by the bullpen as Portland scored three runs to down the Rock Cats, 4-3 on Saturday night.
The Sea Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jose Iglesias led off the third with a single to third baseman Steve Singleton, who was charged with a throwing error that allowed Iglesias to move to second. Iglesias moved to third on a groundout before scoring on Nate Spears' single. That was the lone run allowed by Guerra, who limited the Sea Dogs to six hits and struck out four through 6 1/3 innings.
The Rock Cats answered back in the bottom of the inning. Ben Revere reached base on a one-out walk and Singleton (3-for-4) followed with a single. Rene Tosoni's single to short loaded the bases. Juan Portes then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Revere and tie the game, 1-1. A throwing error by right fielder Ryan Kalish allowed Tosoni to move into scoring position. Chris Parmelee then lined a base hit into center field, knocking in both runners to put the Rock Cats on top.
The Rock Cats handed the ball over to Joe Testa, who kept the Sea Dogs off the board through 1 1/3 innings. Newcomer Matthew Williams - an Australian native who arrived from Single-A Ft. Myers earlier in the day - was sent in to finish the eighth and retired the only batter he faced in the inning. Williams returned to the mound in the top of the ninth to try and give the Rock Cats their second win at home on the season.
Williams struck out the first batter he faced in the ninth before Che-Hsuan Lin lined a base hit into center field. Jose Iglesias then hit a slow grounder back to second baseman Yancarlos Ortiz, who made a questionable decision and threw to second, allowing the runner to be called safe. Chih-Hsien Chiang took advantage of the play and laced a double into right to knock in both runners and tie the game, 3-3. With two outs, Williams intentionally walked Spears to put runners on the corners. The Rock Cats looked to be out of the inning when Ray Chang hit a grounder to Singleton at third, but his throw bounced in front of the bag and couldn't be handled by Parmelee. Chiang crossed the plate with the go-ahead run on the play.
Ryne Lawson (2-2) picked up the win with three scoreless innings in relief. Jason Rice notched his fifth save of the season with a perfect ninth. Williams (0-1) suffered the loss in his Double A debut.
