Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves dropped their fourth straight game as they fell to the Connecticut Defenders, 3-2 on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

Connecticut struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Jonah Nickerson. Brock Bond led off with a walk and Mike McBryde singled to put a pair on for Brad Boyer. Boyer singled home Bond for a 1-0 lead. With Brett Pill hitting and McBryde at third, Pill grounded back to the mound and on a throwing error to the plate by Nickerson, McBryde scored to make it 2-0.

Erie got a run back in the top of the second against Connecticut starter Gievy Garcia. Ryan Strieby led off with a single and stole second base. Garcia retired the next two before walking Max St. Pierre extending the inning for Cale Iorg. Iorg singled to left, scoring Strieby to make it 2-1.

The SeaWolves tied the game up in the top of the fourth. With one out, Deik Scram stepped in and crushed a solo home run to right-center, his 17th, making it a 2-2 game. The home run for Scram was only the 40th home run hit at Dodd Stadium in 2009.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Bond singled off of Nickerson. After Nickerson retired McBryde for the second out, Boyer doubled off the wall in left, scoring Bond for the go-ahead run.

Erie would never rebound. The ‘Wolves loaded the bases against Defenders reliever Dan Runzler in the eighth but failed to score and they left the tying run on base in the ninth, falling 3-2.

Nickerson (8-10) was the tough luck loser going 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and strikeout. He has lost two straight. Reliever Jared Gayhart kept the deficit at a run as he retired the final batter of the seventh and tossed a perfect eighth.

The SeaWolves have started the current road trip 1-4 and have lost eight of their last nine road games.
