Worcester Sharks News Release
HARTFORD-The Worcester Sharks dropped to 0-5 against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Wednesday evening with a 5-2 loss at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. Kaspar and Cavanagh picked up the Sharks' goals, but it wasn't enough. Hartford used a three-goal third period to distance themselves after Worcester had cut the lead to one after two periods.
Devin Setoguchi did increase his point scoring streak to five games. In that time, he has picked up seven points on one goal and six assists.
It wouldn't take long for Hartford to take the early 1-0 lead. After a battle in the corner, the puck squirted to the right wing point. Michael Sauer threw the puck towards the net. It went through two Sharks defensemen and between goaltender Dimitri Patzold's pads for his second goal of the season at 2:47 of the first period. Hugh Jessiman and Alex Bourret picked up the assists on the play.
The Wolf Pack added insurances less than five minutes later at 7:14. Ryan Callahan made the feed to Dane Byers, who took a shot along the near side boards at the left wing corner. Patzold was surprised by the shot and it beat him five hole. Artem Anisimov picked up the other assist on the play.
Worcester had a golden opportunity to inch back into the game. With less than one minute remaining on its first powerplay, Tomas Plihal took a pass from Lukas Kaspar, but was denied point blank by Hartford netminder Miika Wiikman.
It didn't take long for the Sharks to get on the board in the second period. Hartford took a holding penalty 23 seconds into the second frame. Towards the end of the powerplay, Dan Spang found Kaspar at the far side boards. Kaspar skated towards the middle of the ice and let go a wrist shot on top of the right wing circle. It rifled through traffic and past Wiikman to make it 2-1 at the 2:17 mark.
The second period continued to go back and forth with numerous opportunities by both teams, but neither team found the back of the net. Patzold started turning it up and made big saves, keeping the Sharks deficit to only one.
The Wolf Pack once again retook the two-goal advantage at 8:30 of the third period. Bourret and Lauri Korpikoski found themselves on an odd-man rush. Bourret passed to Korpikoski, who returned the favor. Bourret made it count, burying his seventh goal of the season for the 3-1 lead.
It took 1:19 for the Sharks to respond. Hartford's Andrew Hutchinson got crossed up with referee Ryan Fraser. Setoguchi made a quick touch pass to Tom Cavanagh, who picked up his eighth goal of the season at 9:49.
Hartford answered back at 12:52. Thomas Pock took a shot from the right wing side. Patzold made the original save, but the Sharks couldn't clear the zone, and it went to P.A. Parenteau, who shot the puck into the empty net. Callahan picked up his second assist of the evening on the play.
The Wolf Pack capped off the win with a goal by Hugh Jessiman. Patzold made a nice save off a shot from the right wing, but Bourret wouldn't give up on the play, leading to Jessiman's tenth goal of the season at 16:40 of the third.
