Dakota Wizards News Release
BISMARCK, ND - Less than 24 hours after playing an exciting overtime tilt, the Dakota Wizards and Iowa Energy once again met at the Bismarck Civic Center in front of 2,868 fans. Dakota was missing leading scorer Romel Beck, who was out with a back injury. Likewise, Iowa was without big man Marvin Phillips, who missed the game for personal reasons.
Iowa came out of the gate a bit sluggish, shooting only 31.8% in the first period and allowing Dakota to jump out to a 23-16 lead behind ten points from Renaldo Major. USC product Jeff Trapagnier kept the energy in it in the first frame, scoring 13 points in the quarter to keep Iowa close. The Energy managed to cut the lead to 27-25 heading into the second quarter.
The second period saw each team go on its own 7-0 run. Renaldo Major stayed hot, scoring 8 more points to give him 18 heading into the half. Dakota's David Bell matched Major with eight points of his own in the period. Like last night, Bell was called upon to shoulder more of the scoring load with Beck injured. Former Wizard Curtis Stinson also scored eight points in the frame for Iowa while playing all twelve minutes. Dakota found itself with a 54-48 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Wizards extended their lead to eight points in the third on a Darren Cooper jumper with 5:47 remaining in the quarter. An 8-0 Iowa run highlighted by Mark Tyndale's layup and free throw tied the game at 65 with 4:07 left in the period. The two teams battled back and forth as the game was tied five separate times in the final four minutes of the third quarter. Tyndale hit 1-of-2 free throws with six seconds left to put Iowa up 77-74 heading into the final quarter.
The Energy opened up the period with a 14-5 run to go up by twelve points, 91-79. Much like Dakota the night before, Iowa turned up the defensive pressure when it mattered, forcing six turnovers and limiting the Wizards to 36.4% shooting in the fourth quarter. Mark Tyndale continued his solid play down the stretch, scoring ten points in the last frame for the Energy. Dakota's frustration started to visibly boil over, as Maurice Baker and Curtis Stinson exchanged words. Both were ejected, with Stinson heading to the showers early for the second night in a row after being tossed from Thursday's game in overtime. The 104-92 Iowa win snapped Dakota's seven-game home winning streak.
Mark Tyndale led the way for Iowa, scoring 21 points in only 29 minutes of action. Jeff Trepagnier also had a big night for the Energy, adding 20 points of his own. Dakota was paced by Renaldo Major, who scored a season-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds. Curtis Withers posted his fifth double-double of the season for Dakota with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Wizards will next welcome Rio Grande Valley to Bismarck for a pair of games. Iowa heads home to take on Albuquerque on Sunday.
