Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- Andrew Wishy grounded a one-out single to left in the bottom of the 10th inning, plating Yohanny Valera from second base with the game-winner, as the Tornadoes took out the Quebec Capitales, 8-7, at Hanover Insurance Park on Thursday night.

The Tornadoes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a Mike DeCarlo two-run home run and a Dominic Ramos clutch two-out RBI single off lefty Raul Rodriguez. The Capitales got two back in the top of the 3rd, using a Nick Trainor solo home run off Alex Pena and a Ivan Naccarata sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Worcester tacked on one more in the bottom of the 3rd inning, as a Rico Santana sacrifice fly brought home Patrick Perry and made it 4-2, Worcester.

But Quebec jumped all over Alex Pena in the 5th, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring 5 runs on 5 hits, a walk and a hit batter to take the lead for the first time all night, 7-4. However, the Tornadoes got back-to-back clutch two-out hits from Keith Beauregard (RBI single) and Ramos (2-run single) to tie the game 7-7 in the 6th. The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 10th when Yohanny Valera drew a leadoff walk off righty Shawn Ryan (1-1). Santana sacrificed him to second base to set the stage for Wishy. Wishy worked the count full, then grounded a single to left, bringing Valera home with the game-winner.

P.J. Bevis (2-3) picked up the win with 3 shutout innings, including an impressive string of 6 consecutive swinging strikeouts in the 8th-10th innings. Ryan (1-1) took the loss. The Tornadoes bullpen of Chris Shank and Bevis combined on 5.2 shutout innings. Santana made a game-saving play in the 8th, gunning down Benoit Emond at the plate after an Eddie Lantigua single. The Tornadoes are now 5-3 in extra inning games and 7 of the 8 extra innings games (including all 5 wins) have come in exactly 10 innings. The walkoff win was the Tornadoes 6th of the season. Worcester will try to make it back-to-back victories over Quebec on Friday night when they send righty Junior Guerrero to the mound against Capitales righty Gabe Ribas. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
