New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT- The New Haven County Cutters lost for the third straight night Thursday this time to the Atlantic City Surf 6-2 at Historic Yale Field.

The Cutters offense was dismal for the second straight night as they could only muster five hits against Surf pitching. Two of the hits were solo home runs, one by CF Ervin Alcantara to lead off the game and one by DH Jeremy Pickrel in the bottom of the ninth when the game was well out of hand.

In between the towering solo blasts by Alcantara and Pickrel was a streak of 13 straight Cutters batters retired by Surf starter and winner Monte Mansfield (6-7), two hits in the sixth and then another streak of 10 straight Cutters hitters sent down until Pick's blast in the ninth.

Brad Whitworth (7-4) had another rocky outing in the loss giving up five runs on eight hits over seven innings. Whit did manage to strike out eight though tying his season high.

Trailing 4-1 in the sixth the Cutters got the first two runners in the inning aboard in 2B Matt Mercurio and Alcantara. LF Henri Stanley who had a wonderful game defensively sacrificed them into scoring position but the Cutters squandered the opportunity and with it their best chance in the ballgame to make things interesting.

The Cutters will play the final game of the five game home stand tomorrow night against the Surf at 7:05 P.M. Kevin Culpepper (1-3) will square off against Coogie Freedman (3-3). This is the last home game for the Cutters until they return from a nine game road trip on Aug 28th.
