American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(NASHUA, NH, August 16, 2007) Nashua righthander Akira Okamoto overcame a shaky first inning Thursday night as the Pride came from behind to down the New Jersey Jackals, 6-4, before 1,070 at Historic Holman Stadium. Okamoto (7-2) spotted the Jackals a 3-0 first inning lead but the Pride bounced back to win their fourth straight home game.
Nashua scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third to tie the game at 3-3. New Jersey took a 4-3 advantage with a single run in the fourth but the Pride rallied for three in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. The big blow in the uprising was a two-run double by Bryan Duplissie that put Nashua up, 5-4. Nashua added an insurance run when Chris Colabello scored on an Austin Wasserman fielder's choice. Colabello, Tommy Rojas and Luis Rodriguez each had two hits to pace Nashua's 10-hit attack.
Former Boston Red Sox third baseman Wilton Veras had three hits and an RBI for New Jersey.
Okamoto went seven innings, scattering eight hits, allowing four runs (three earned). He walked one and struck out four. Steve Palazzolo and Rich "El Guapo" Garces each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Pride. Garces worked the ninth for his 15th save, third best in the Can-Am League.
New Jersey's Josh Brey, the first of three Jackals pitchers, went five-plus inning, giving up eight hits, six runs (all earned), he walked five and fanned two.
Game two of the four-game series will be played Friday night at 7:05 at Historic Holman Stadium. Just back from a stint in the Kansas City Royals organization, Tim Bausher (RHP, 4-2, 3.50) will pitch for the Pride. Joel Bennett (LHP, 3-2, 3.17) is scheduled to pitch for the Jackals.
Manager Butch Hobson will be signing free autographs on Saturday from 11 am to 1 pm at the Hudson Mall in Hudson, New Hampshire.
