Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Great Lakes Loons 8-7 in ten innings on Friday night at Down Diamond. On Saturday in the same location, the Rattlers fell behind 5-2 and made another late push for a victory. This time, the Loons bullpen held on to beat Wisconsin 5-4.
Loons starting pitcher Kendall Williams retired the first eleven Timber Rattlers hitters he faced. Then, Joe Gray Jr. hammered a 2-1 pitch from Williams over the wall in left for his sixth homer of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The lead was brief for Wisconsin (24-36).
Rattlers starter Tyler Woessner walked Alex Freeland walked and Yeiner Fernandez doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Woessner broke Damon Keith's bat on an 0-2 pitch, but the ball dropped into left for an RBI single to tie the game and put runners at the corners. Griffin Lockwood knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. A two-out single by Ismael Alcantara capped the scoring in the inning.
Great Lakes (42-19) added a manufactured run in the bottom of the fifth. Reliever Ryan Brady walked Alex Freeland with one out. Freeland stole second and took third on a groundout. Brady would throw a wild pitch to left Freeland to score and the Loons were up 4-1.
Wisconsin had Alex Hall at third and Eduardo García at first with one out when relief pitcher Jack Dreyer threw wildly to first on a pickoff play. Hall scored easily, but García was thrown out trying to advance to third base for the second out.
Frank Rodríguez added to the Loons lead with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-2 lead.
The Rattlers got to Mitchell Tyranski, the fourth Loons pitcher of the game, in the top of the eighth. Eduarqui Fernández doubled to start the inning. Terence Doston followed with a single and alertly took second on a throw to the plate that missed the cutoff man. Robert Moore was next, and he doubled off the wall in left to score Doston. Then, Matt Wood walked, and the Rattlers had the tying run at second, and the lead run on first with no outs.
The Loons went back to the bullpen and brought Benony Robles to the mound. Robles stranded both runners as he retired the next three batters on two weak popups and a strikeout. Robles, who saved a 3-2 win for Great Lakes on Thursday night, went back out for the ninth and set down the side in order on two routine flyouts and a strikeout to dash any hopes of a second straight late comeback victory for the Timber Rattlers.
Saturday's game was the fourth in a row between the teams to be decided by one run. The Loons have won three of those close games.
The final game of the series - and of Wisconsin's two-week road trip to Michigan - is Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. The game is scheduled to be a rematch between the starting pitchers in game one with Edwin Jimenez (2-1, 2.16) as the starter for Wisconsin and Hyun-il Choi (2-1, 2.57) set to start for the Loons. Game time is 12:05pm CDT. The broadcast is on AM1280 WNAM starting with the Community Blood Center at 11:45am. Fans can listen on the radio, on the First Pitch app, or at this link. The internet video feed is available to subscribers of Bally Live, too.
Wisconsin will be off on Monday before starting a series with the Lansing Lugnuts at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski is set to make his home debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Game time on Tuesday is 6:40pm.
