Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The ECHL announced yesterday that Mike Wirll of the Charlotte Checkers was a runner-up In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week for January 3-9.

The 5'10", 206-pound right wing had an outstanding weekend against the Columbia Inferno and the Florida Everblades, racking up four goals and three assists. He has 14 points total in 18 games.

"He has a tremendous amount of ability," Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson said of Wirll, after Friday's game against Columbia. Until that point, Wirll had scored only two goals on 21 shots in the last 10 games. "He could easily play in the AHL, and this game, he finally got his confidence back."

Wirll, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, began his career in 1997 with the Brandon Wheat Kings. The right hander has 314 total career points in 357 games. Last year, he played with both the Checkers and the Jacksonville Barracudas.
