Anchorage, Alaska - The Idaho Steelheads lost in a shootout the first game of a two-game set in Alaska tonight, 3-2. Idaho is now 3-1-2 against the Aces this season, and trails Alaska by 5 points in the standings.

"You can never be happy to be up 2-0 and lose a game, but we did a lot of good things tonight, and executed our game plan," Head Coach John Olver said after the game. "You get a bad bounce that goes against you, and all of a sudden it's 2-1, and we go into the third period trying to hold a one-goal lead. It's psychological. We didn't win the game, we tied, picked a point on the road. If we win tomorrow night we can win three points up here. We played a good, solid road game."

Idaho's All-Star goalie Frank Doyle stopped 29-31 shots and falls to 13-6-2, while Alaska's Peter Aubry stopped 23-25 Steelheads attempts and improves to 13-7-2.

Both teams skated through a scoreless first period, and they were even on the shot chart with 7 shots apiece.

Idaho tallied the first goal in the second period, when Darrell Hay lit the lamp at 4:24. Helpers came from Frank Lukes and Riley Riddell. Steelheads made it 2-0 on the power play when Lukes banged home a rebound off of Dan Vandermeer's shot. Alaska's netminder Peter Aubry made the initial stop, but couldn't control the rebound and Lukes found the open net at 10:21. Late in the second period, miscommunication between Doyle and defenseman Petr Suchanek left the puck sitting in front of the Idaho net where the league's top goal scorer Chris Minard scored to draw the Aces within one goal.

Alaska scored the only goal of the third period at 13:42 to knot the game at two. Charles Linglet took capitalized on a Steelheads turnover and beat Doyle, sending the game to overtime.

Both teams had chances in the fourth frame, but both Doyle and Aubry were equal to the task.

In the shootout, Alaska beat Idaho 2-1 with goals from Minard and B.J. Young. Idaho's first four shooters missed with Bobby Russell scoring the Idaho's only shootout tally.
