Winterhawks Win High-Scoring Affair against Seattle
March 29, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Normally when a team is competing in it's third game in three days, energy can be low and thus, in turn, scoring as well can be low.
That wasn't the case Sunday at the accesso ShoWare Center in Seattle, as the two sides combined for 11 goals, including a fiery second period that contained six.
Portland was down early, 90 seconds in to be exact, when 2021 NHL Draft prospect Conner Roulette tucked home a penalty shot past Brock Gould to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
Just a shift or two after the marker, captain and defenseman Nick Cicek went to bat for his team in response, squaring off with Thunderbirds leader Tyrel Bauer at center ice for a heavy scrap. Cicek got the better of his rival before the linesmen intervened and sparked some momentum for his club.
Minutes later Gabe Klassen used that momentum to rifle home a bullet from the slot to make it a 1-1 game.
Heading into the second at 1-1, both teams turned up the offense for what would be the most hectic period of Winterhawks season to date.
It took eight minutes for the scoring to get started, but when it did Seattle went back-to-back in 28 seconds to take a 3-1 edge. Just two minutes later though, Robbie Fromm-Delorme slid one home and the power play and 61 seconds after that, Ryan McCleary got his first as a member of the Western Hockey League with a shot from the point.
The two sides would alternate goals one more time before the second period horn, beginning 13 seconds after Portland's game-tying goal. The Winterhawks fourth of the night came on a rebound from Simon Knak, his fourth in four games and first of two on the night.
Heading into the final 20 tied up at 4-4, the Winterhawks would prevail as the only team to score in the third, doing so three times en route to the win.
Seth Jarvis snuck home a shorthanded tally, the fourth in six games for the team, Kyle Chyzowski also netted his first as a WHLer and Simon Knak hit the empty net for his team-leading fifth.
Behind it all Brock Gould earned his second win in two starts for Portland, denying 30 shots along the way.
THEY SAID IT
"I was really happy with the way the guys responded after last night. Certainly we were disappointed with the loss. I thought we played a really good game Friday against Everett, last we had bits and pieces where we wanted them, but today we had a good meeting with our players, we helped them fix what they had to fix and indivudally some players took their game to the next level, which was nice to see."
Winterhawks Vice President / General Manager / Head Coach Mike Johnston following the contest.
NOTES
