ICE Defeat Warriors 4-1 in Spirited Tilt

March 29, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release

The Winnipeg ICE and the Moose Jaw Warriors face off tonight, as the ICE look to snap their two-game slid against a Moose Jaw team who has lost three straight games. Boston Bilous and Daniel Hauser received the starts for their respective teams, with Hauser looking for his third straight career win as the ICE rookie has gone 2-0 in his first two starts this season.

It was a busy first 10 minutes for the referees with each team receiving 2 penalties a piece, including a short 5-on-3 for the Warriors. It was the ICE however, who would capitalize on their advantage as Jakin Smallwood netted his 8th of the year after beating Bilous five-hole. Just one minute after drawing the assist on the Smallwood goal, Peyton Krebs would score for himself as Connor McClennon found Owen Pederson from behind the net who then tapped it over to Krebs and the ICE captain fired it past Bilous' short-side for the 2-0 lead. Bilous was pulled in favour of Brett Mirwald after letting in two goals on four shots. Moose Jaw led 11-6 in shots after one period.

A relatively uneventful second period ended with a penalty shot being awarded to Anderson MacDonald after the ICE forward was slashed on a partial breakaway. MacDonald went in on Mirwald and ripped a shot off the corner of the pipe and down, hitting the goal line but not crossing it. The play was reviewed but quickly confirmed as a no-goal. The ICE took their 2-0 lead into the second intermission as they also led the shot count 18-17.

Moose Jaw's Eric Alarie would cut the Warriors deficit to one at 10:35 of the third period as his shot hit a leg in front and got past Hauser. Tate Popple and Cole Jordan drew the assists on the play. After a Braden Miller penalty expired, Cole Muir poked home a loose puck in the blue paint after Conor Geekie fired it at Mirwald. Things would get heated, as Calder Anderson got called for cross-checking Muir after the puck had gone in. Logan Daoust would get a ten minute unsportsmanlike conduct during the play as well. Minutes later Josh Hoekstra received a ten minute misconduct for checking Conor Geekie from behind which led to a full on scrum. Jackson Leppard would get the extra for roughing during the ensuing confrontation. Leppard would come out of the box and fire it into the empty net as the Warriors had pulled Mirwald for the 6-on-4. Shots finished 28-21 in the ICE's favour.

Winnipeg has a two day break before hitting the ice on Wednesday for a game against the Saskatoon Blades. Puck drop is 9:00pm CT.
