Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Complete First-Round Sweep

May 2, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

As the first round shifted to Prince George, so too did the Winterhawks' momentum as they knocked off the Cougars in both games three and four to sweep the series and become the first team to advance to round two of the 2022 WHL Playoffs.

Portland's second-round opponent and schedule will be determined once the series between the Everett Silvertips and Vancouver Giants reaches its conclusion. Vancouver currently holds a 3-2 lead in that series, with Game 6 set for tonight from Langley, B.C.

Hot Hawks:

Forward James Stefan recorded an assist on Gabe Klassen's first of two Game 3 goals, then flipped the script in Game 4 as he finished off Klassen's setup to open the Winterhawks' scoring in the decisive contest.

Forward Nicholas Johnson came into the lineup in Game 4 for just his second career WHL game and recorded the secondary assist on Luke Schelter's game-winning goal.

Forward Gabe Klassen potted both Portland goals in Game 3, then set up James Stefan's opening tally in Game 4. Klassen has points in three of four games to start the postseason, including a pair of multi-point performances.

Forward Luke Schelter also found the scoresheet in each contest, posting an assist in Game 3 then netting the series-winning goal in Game 4. Schelter now has points in three of his first four career playoff games.

Goaltender Taylor Gauthier picked up his first playoff shutout with 28 saves in Tuesday's Game 3 victory, then turned aside 29 of 30 in Game 4 to wrap up the sweep of his former club. Gauthier also earned WHL Goalie of the Week honors for his strong work between the pipes in Games 3 and 4.

Weekly Rewind:

Game 3: Portland 2 vs Prince George 0 (POR leads 3-0)

Gabe Klassen scored twice, Taylor Gauthier turned aside all 28 shots that came his way and the Portland Winterhawks knocked off the Prince George Cougars 2-0 at CN Centre to go up 3-0 in their first-round WHL Playoffs series.

Game 4: Portland 2 vs Prince George 1 (POR wins 4-0)

Two first-period goals and a 29-save performance from Taylor Gauthier helped the Portland Winterhawks take a 2-1 win over the Prince George Cougars, completing the first-round sweep as Portland became the first WHL team to advance to round two of the 2022 Playoffs.

The Week Ahead:

The second round of the playoffs is right around the corner, but the waiting game continues as Everett and Vancouver wrap up their first-round series. Game 6 of that best-of-seven is set for tonight at Langley Events Center, and the Giants could advance with a victory.

A Vancouver win in that series sets up a Portland/Seattle second round, while an Everett comeback means it'll be Portland and Kamloops facing off. While we wait to see who's next and when we'll have more games at the VMC, dive deeper into potential matchups here!
