Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks opened the 2015-16 preseason with a 7-2 win against the Spokane Chiefs Friday in a game played in Everett, Washington.
The Hawks opened the game with a pair of power play goals in the first period, first from Reed Morison at 12:52, followed by Dominic Turgeon banging in a rebound at 18:53 for a 2-0 lead they took into the second.
Turgeon struck again with his second of the game 5:38 into the second to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Portland kept up the pressure, and were rewarded again when defenseman Caleb Jones scored on a wrist shot at 8:53 to extend the advantage to 4-0.
The Chiefs got on the board at 14:08 when Taylor Ross scored to cut the deficit to 4-1 heading into the third.
Spokane got within two early in the third when Curtis Miske scored to make it 4-2. The Hawks refused to let the Chiefs get any closer, as they made it 5-2 minutes later when defenseman Brendan De Jong wired a shot past netminder Matt Berlin, followed quickly by Jack Flaman scoring to make it a 6-2 lead.
Midway through the frame, Alex Schoenborn took a feed from Cody Glass and fired a shot from the right faceoff circle past Berlin's wall to push the lead to 7-2, which remained as the final.
The Hawks' preseason schedule continues tomorrow when they take on the Tri-City Americans at 11:30 a.m. in Everett.
