Winterhawks Sign Prospect Luke Schelter

March 16, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks are pleased to announce the signing of Centennial, CO native and forward Luke Schelter.

Schelter (6-2, 181 lbs.) was named 2020-21 Team Captain of NorthStar Christian Academy's 16U program in Minnesota and he is currently enjoying an impressive season with the Knights. The future Winterhawk has registered 40 goals and 30 assists for 70 points in 64 games this year, ranking him top ten in the country among 16U AAA scorers.

Growing up, Schelter played for the Colorado Thunderbirds prestigious youth organization and he looks to continue the excellent connection the Winterhawks have in the Centennial State. Notable Winterhawks alumni from Colorado include former Winterhawks captain Dominic Turgeon, last year's alternate captain Jake Gricius and Alex Overhardt.

Schelter was selected by the Winterhawks in the sixth round, 124th overall, of the 2019 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. The 2004-born draft class has proven fruitful for Head Coach and General Manager Mike Johnston as Schelter becomes the fifth player from the class to sign a WHL standard player agreement with Portland, joining Kyle Chyzowski (Center - 3rd Round), Ryder Thompson (Defense - 5th Round), Josh Mori (Defense - 8th Round), and Marcus Nguyen (Forward - 11th Round).
