Swift Current Broncos News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (0-2-0-0) clawed their way back to within one after being down 5-1 late in the second period against the Winnipeg ICE (1-1-0-0), but couldn't complete the comeback in a 6-4 loss.

Connor McClennon opened the scoring for Winnipeg while shorthanded, as he stepped around a diving pokecheck on a 2-on-1 rush and fired a shot past the blocker side of Isaac Poulter.

Jakin Smallwood added a power-play goal a few minutes later, taking a centring feed from Peyton Krebs to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead after the first period. Shots were 15-1 for the ICE.

Michael Farren got the Broncos on the board in the second after taking a chip pass from Bode Hagan. Farren came in on a breakaway, beating rookie goalie Daniel Hauser on the backhand to make it 2-1. Mathew Ward received the second assist on the goal, his first WHL point.

The ICE would rattle off three goals in 3:17, with Anderson MacDonald, Zachary Benson and Smallwood scoring to give Winnipeg a 5-1 lead late in the period.

The Broncos pushed back with Eric Houk and Cole Nagy scoring 1:32 apart in the final two minutes of the second to cut the ICE lead to 5-3 heading into the final 20.

Aiden Bulych scored off a faceoff in the ICE zone just 59 seconds into the third to make it a one-goal game, but that was as close as the Broncos would come before Winnipeg added a power-play goal with 12 seconds left to seal the win.

The Broncos are next in action Wednesday night when they take on the Regina Pats (0-2-0-0) at 8:00.
