ICE Pick up First Win of the Season
March 16, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The ICE were back in action for their "home opener" against the Swift Current Broncos, as they searched for their first win of the season after losing 3-2 to Brandon in their season opener on Saturday. The Broncos are coming off a loss as well, as they dropped their season opener to Saskatoon 4-2.
For the second straight game the ICE opened the scoring in the first period, when Connor McClennon took the puck shorthanded on a 2-on-1 and buried it blocker side. The ICE added to their lead just three minutes later on the power-play when Jakin Smallwood found the back of the net with a wrist shot from the slot after Broncos' got called for too many men. Shots were 15-1 in favour of the ICE after the first frame.
Swift Current cut the deficit to one halfway through the second period as Michael Farren went backhand top-shelf after Bode Hagan sprung him on a breakaway. The ICE would respond as Cole Muir found Anderson MacDonald all alone in the slot, as the 20 year-old scored his first ever WHL career goal with a well placed shot that went post and in. It was another first career WHL goal as 15 year-old Zach Benson went top corner over Broncos' goalie Isaac Poulter in just his second career WHL game. Smallwood would add another goal three minutes later, but Swift Current would respond with two goals of their own before the period finished, with Eric Houk and Cole Nagy potting one each for the Broncos. Shots after two periods were 25-11 for the ICE.
Swift Current scored their third straight goal under a minute into the 3rd period as Kaleb Bulych fired a shot from the point that beat ICE goalie Daniel Hauser. As the Broncos' pulled Poulter, they got called for too many men, and Peyton Krebs made them pay as he deflected a Mike Ladyman pass in the dying seconds to clinch the 6-4 victory for the ICE.
ICE are back at the Brandt Centre on Wednesday for a matchup with the Saskatoon Blades.
