Winterhawks Score Early and Often in 10-5 Win in Spokane Wednesday
February 10, 2011 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (37-15-0-3) scored five goals a span of 1:59 in the first period Wednesday as they blitzed the Spokane Chiefs and never looked back en route to a 10-5 road win over the Spokane Chiefs (32-15-4-2).
The 10 goals marked a season-high from the Winterhawks and the first time since November 2002 they reached double figures in scoring in a game. Brad Ross registered a hat trick and Ryan Johansen totaled five points in the win. Including Saturday's 8-2 win over the Tri-City Americans, the Winterhawks have 18 goals in their last two games against the second and third place teams in the Western Conference.
The win gave Portland 77 points on the season, seven points ahead of the Chiefs and eight points ahead of the Tri-City Americans, who were idle Wednesday. The Winterhawks have won four in a row and are 10-1 in their last 11 games.
Portland opened the scoring at the 16:11 mark of the first period on a shorthanded goal by Taylor Peters, and from there the floodgates opened. Peters' tally was the first of five Winterhawks goals in a span of just 1:59, with Ross, Riley Boychuk, Ryan Johansen and Craig Cunningham all scoring in quick succession to make it 5-0. After the fourth goal, Spokane netminder Mac Engel was pulled in favor of backup Adam Iwan.
After the Chiefs scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second period to make it 5-2, the Winterhawks continued the onslaught with four straight goals, with Cunningham, Joe Morrow and two from Ross to complete the hat trick to give Portland a 9-2 lead going into the third period.
Spokane's Tyler Johnson scored two goals early in the third period to make the score 9-4, but Ty Rattie got on the board for Portland to hit double digits and give the Hawks a 10-4 lead. The Chiefs' Collin Valcourt scored at the 12:42 mark to make it 10-5 to round out the scoring.
The Winterhawks were 1-3 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill with two shorthanded goals.
Portland had seven players finish with two points or more in the game, led by Johansen's five points and the hat trick from Ross.
The Winterhawks return home to take on the Americans Friday night in a big divisional game, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
