Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (16-4-1-0) fell 6-4 Friday in a road contest against the Kamloops Blazers (18-5-0-1).

The defeat snapped Portland's 12-game winning streak, which had been the franchise's longest since the 1997-98 season.

Kamloops opened the scoring 52 seconds into game on a goal by Tim Bozon, but the Hawks tied it up at the 4:05 mark on a goal by Taylor Peters. The score remained 1-1 until late in the period, when Kamloops got goals from Brendan Ranford and Tyler Hansen to take a 3-1 lead into the second period.

Portland got back within one at the 8:04 mark of the second when Nic Petan took a feed from Brendan Leipsic and beat Blazers netminder Cole Cheveldave to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Hawks then evened the game when Leipsic scored his 12th of the season at the 15:45 mark to make it 3-3. The Blazers regained the lead at the 17:13 mark on a goal by JC Lipon to take a 4-3 lead into the third period.

After the Blazers made it 5-3 at the 3:57 mark on a goal by Colin Smith, the Hawks again got back within one when defenseman Troy Rutkowski scored just under two minutes later to bring Portland back within one, 5-4. It remained a one-goal game until under a minute to go. With goaltender Mac Carruth on the bench for an extra attacker, the Hawks created numerous chances looking for the equalizer, but the Blazers withstood the pressure and scored an empty net goal with five seconds remaining to seal the 6-4 win.

Brendan Leipsic registered his seventh straight multi-point game and extended his point streak to nine games overall with one goal and two assists. Leipsic has nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points during his streak.

Rutkowski played his 300th career game Friday, and he's now just 26 games behind the franchise's all-time leader, Kevin Haupt.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 p.m. in the Rose Garden.
