Winterhawks Fall 6-1 in Spokane Sunday

The Portland Winterhawks (30-14-2-1) fell 6-1 in Spokane against the Chiefs (25-14-3-3) Sunday.

Spokane's Mike Aviani opened the scoring 26 seconds into the game, then the Chiefs got a shorthanded goal from Liam Stewart at the 7:40 mark of the first to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.

In the second, Spokane got goals from Aviani, Mitch Holmberg and Dylan Walchuk to take a 5-0 lead into the third. The Hawks replaced starting netminder Mac Carruth with Brendan Burke after Spokane's fifth goal.

Portland got on the board at the 7:51 mark of the third on a power play goal by Sven Bartschi to make it 5-1, but Spokane's Holmberg scored his second of the game at the 12:48 mark to make it 6-1, which would stand as the final.

With an assist tonight on Bartschi's goal, Ty Rattie now has 81 points on the season, tying him for top spot in the league with Regina's Jordan Weal.

The Hawks were 1-4 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill Sunday.

The Hawks are back in action Tuesday when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. They'll be looking to extend their franchise-record home winning streak to 18 games.
