Winterhawks Complete Perfect Weekend with 8-3 Win
March 6, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Tyson Kozak and Gabe Klassen each scored twice and Cross Hanas notched three assists as another rampant offensive showing carried the Winterhawks past the Americans 8-3 at the VMC on Saturday.
The win marked Portland's fifth in a row, and fifth consecutive outing scoring four or more goals.
Tri-City took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as Sasha Mutala got his team on the board, but a 4-1 run in the second had Portland rolling through 40. Aidan Litke leveled the score early in the frame, followed soon after by Kozak's go-ahead strike for a lead the Hawks would not relinquish. Petr Moravec tied things up for Tri-City, but another two strikes from Klassen and Kozak sent the Hawks ahead 4-2 heading into the third.
Robbie Fromm-Delorme, Marcus Nguyen and Luca Cagnoni each found twine for Portland to put the game out of reach in the first 12 minutes of the final frame. Fromm-Delorme capitalized on a 2-on-1 rush with Hanas, while Nguyen and Cagnoni each unleashed long-range wrist shots that eluded Tri-City's Nick Avakyan. After Rhett Melnyk put another on the board for the Americans, Klassen wrapped things up with his second of the night at 16:07.
Dante Giannuzzi stopped 27 of 30 shots for his third straight win between the pipes. The Hawks are next in action on Tuesday in Victoria, B.C. against the Royals.
