Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 16, 2010) - After back-to-back walk-off wins, there was noticeably less drama on Wednesday night, as the Dash thumped Frederick 13-7 at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem scored six runs in the eighth to take a commanding lead and held off a late Keys rally to take the first two contests of the three-game series.
The Dash (42-23) cut its magic number to two with the win and remains 3.5 games ahead of Salem in the Southern Division. The Red Sox beat Wilmington 9-6 on Wednesday to keep their faint first half title hopes alive. For Winston-Salem to clinch at home on Thursday (the final home game before the All-Star Break), the team will need to beat Frederick and have Salem lose its series finale with the Blue Rocks. Any other scenario will mean that the Dash would have to clinch at Wilmington this weekend.
Winston-Salem went up early with four runs in the second off Keys starter Nate Nery (5-6). Drew Garcia had an RBI single and Justin Greene followed with a two-run triple. Later in the inning, Eduardo Escobar brought home a run on a single to center to give the Dash a 4-0 lead.
The Keys (38-28) plated a pair in the third against Dylan Axelrod, who was making his second start of the season. Jacob Julius hit a two-run single to halve the Winston advantage.
After the Dash scored a run in the fifth on an Ozzie Lewis RBI single, Frederick made it a one-run ballgame with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth. With a man on first and no one out, Buck Britton reached on a throwing error by the catcher Luis Sierra. Two batters later, Brian Ward brought home a run on a double-play ball. Xavier Avery followed with an RBI double to cut the Winston lead to 5-4.
The Dash responded with a pair of unearned runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. An error allowed Justin Greene to reach base and later in the frame, Jon Gilmore brought home two with a single to right to re-establish the three-run lead.
Winston put the game away with six runs in the eighth against Jose Duran and John Mariotti. Lewis and Sierra each had two-run hits as Gilmore and Garcia each collected an RBI. The Dash sent 12 men to the plate and led 13-4.
The Keys notched three in the top of the ninth to account for the final margin. Charlis Burdie (2-1) collected the win with 1.2 innings of work. Nery allowed five runs in 4.1 innings in the loss.
The Dash plays its final home game of the season's first half on Thursday night, when RHP Stephen Sauer (5-2, 4.06) opposes RHP Oliver Drake (1-2, 4.34) in a 7 p.m. start. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
Notes: At three hours, 21 minutes, the game was Winston's longest nine-inning game of the season... The Dash batted around in both the second and eighth innings and scored ten of its 13 runs in those frames... Seth Loman and Bobby Stevens were the only position players who went hitless in a game that featured 33 hits and 20 runs... Five Dash players had multi-RBI games, with Gilmore and Lewis leading the way with three each... The game featured one 1-2-3 inning, when Axelrod worked a perfect second inning...
