Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - With arguably the top pitcher in all of minor league baseball on the mound for the Pelicans, just a minor eruption of the offense would be enough on a muggy Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field. Julio Teheran showed the baseball world that he's worth the price of admission while the Pelican offense pounded out 14 hits and eight runs of support to win their third consecutive series at home, 8-0 against the Potomac Nationals.
In a game where the Pelican pitching staff whiffed 14 P-Nat batters, it's fitting the hurlers get top billing on this night. Teheran (3-1) was nothing short of sensational in his sixth Carolina League start, tossing seven brilliant shutout frames while striking out 12 Potomac batters. In picking up his third Carolina League victory, Teheran struck out the side in his seventh and final inning while retiring six of the final seven men he faced via the strikeout.
Teheran has now reached double digits in strikeouts in three of his six starts while now sporting an outstanding K/BB ratio of 47/7 through 39 innings.
With Teheran cruising on the mound, the Pelican offense didn't need to muster much against Potomac starter Evan Bronson (2-5) but the Birds' bats blew up in the first inning as four runs came around to score. Former P-Nat Dan Nelson took it to his former team with a sharp two-run single to right and Samuel Sime blooped a double down the right-field line to score another and the Pelicans were well on their way to their seventh consecutive home victory.
Travis Jones added another run in the fifth on a solo round tripper, his second in as many nights, to push the lead to 5-0 and the Pelicans would plate three more en route to their largest shutout victory of the 2010 campaign.
Hot hitting shortstop Mycal Jones recorded his fifth multi-hit games in his first six contests in the Carolina League while Luis Sumoza and L.V. Ware each roped three hits apiece. The Pelicans now have recorded double-digit hits in three of the last four games as the team gains momentum as the first half winds down.
One of the Pelicans' most popular promotions will take place on the finale of the series with the P-Nats as Thirsty Thursday returns to the Grand Strand. From 6-8 PM, fans can purchase dollar drafts at the ballpark presented by Budweiser, Malibu's Surf Club, and the Weekly Surge. It will also be Toy Story Night at BB&T Coastal Field with clips and games from the classic animated movies all night long. The Pelicans will also be promoting Toy Story 3, due to be released nationwide on June 18.
