Potomac Nationals News Release
(MYRTLE BEACH, SC) The Nationals organization knows a little something about a young pitcher who, surrounded by impossible hype, somehow manages to exceed expectations and deliver dominating performances. The Atlanta Braves have a young phenom in their own ranks, and he did his best Stephen Strasburg impression Wednesday night in Myrtle Beach, blowing away the P-Nats in an 8-0 victory.
Julio Teheran struck out 12 over seven shutout innings and yielded just two hits to a Potomac lineup that was overmatched by the flame-throwing righthander. And the 19-year-old only got stronger as the night went on; his twelfth and final punchout came on a 95 mile-per-hour fastball.
The Pelicans gave Teheran - who was named a Carolina League All Star after only three overpowering starts - all the run support he would need right out of the gates. L.V. Ware and Mycal Jones led off the first with two singles, and Evan Bronson walked Travis Jones to load the bases. After a getting the Third Jones (first baseman Michael) to pop out, Bronson got burned by a familiar face.
Dan Nelson roped a two-run single down the right field line to open the scoring. Travis Jones would then score on a wild pitch, and Nelson came across home plate on Samuel Sime's RBI double that made it 4-0.
Teheran only had one strikeout in the first two innings, a swinging punchout of Will Ortiz that ended the second. But in the third, he began sending Potomac hitters back to the dugout in bunches. He fanned two in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and struck out the side in the seventh to cap a truly remarkable night. The Colombian hurler now has 49 strikeouts in 39 innings with the Pelicans against only 7 walks.
Myrtle tacked on runs in each of the fifth through seventh innings. Travis Jones hit a solo home run to open the fifth; a Ware triple and throwing error plated two in the sixth; and Luis Sumoza hit a two-out, bases loaded single to right in the seventh that capped the scoring.
Potomac will look to salvage the finale of the series and of the seven-game road trip Thursday night behind righthander Adrian Alaniz. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. and the broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:50.
