SALEM, VA (MAY 15, 2011) - The Red Sox came back from a four-run deficit to force extra innings, but Jake Oester's two-out single in the tenth drove in the game winning run, giving the Dash a 6-5 win. Sunday's victory at LewisGale Field gave Winston-Salem its first series sweep of the season, and was the team's first sweep at Salem since 2006.

Winston-Salem (17-19) has won eight of the team's last nine games, and improved to 9-5 in May.

Starter Joe Serafin struggled with his command in the first inning for Winston. Peter Hissey doubled with one out, and after Serafin retired Kolbrin Vitek he walked Reynaldo Rodriguez and Dan Butler to load the bases. With two outs, Shannon Wilkerson harmlessly flew out to right field to end the inning. After the Butler walk, Serafin set down 12 straight Sox hitters.

Winston-Salem's offense hit the scoreboard in the third inning after Luis Sierra led off with a double, and came around to score after two consecutive groundouts. Austin Yount moved Sierra to third, and Daniel Wagner picked up an RBI groundout.

With two outs in the sixth inning, the Dash added another run after Tyler Saladino was hit by a pitch and then scored on Kyle Colligan's double to the center field wall. Colligan entered the game in the bottom of the third inning to play right field, after Jose Martinez originally started in that spot.

Ian Gac led off the seventh inning with a single for Winston-Salem. After Red Sox reliever Tom Ebert set down Andy Wilkins, Nick Ciolli singled to right field to put runners on first and second with one out. Luis Sierra was then called out on strikes before Yount and Wagner connected on successive run-scoring singles to put the Dash up 4-0.

Salem (21-13) got on the board in the bottom of the inning after Serafin exited the ballgame for reliever Justin Collop. Wilkerson reached on a lead-off single, and later scored on Zach Gentile's single.

The Dash scored once more in the ninth. Sierra led off the inning with a single and eventually scored when Colligan reached on Vitek's throwing error from third base. The unearned run made the score 5-1.

In the last of the ninth, Salem's bats woke up. Reliever Ryan Kussmaul walked Gentile and Michael Almanzar to start up the inning before Jeremy Hazelbaker singled to load the bases with nobody out. Taylor Thompson entered the ballgame to pitch and induced Hissey to pop out, but the next three Red Sox hitters drove in runs. Vitek singled to score Gentile and Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to pull the Sox within two. Butler, who was hitless in his previous 25 at-bats, doubled past Colligan to score two runs and tie the game at five.

Winston wasted no time in getting on the board in the second straight extra-inning ballgame. Gac opened the tenth with a single and was bunted to second by Wilkins. Ciolli then grounded out to second to move Gac to third. Sox reliever Mitch Herold walked the next batter, Sierra, to put Dash at the corners with two outs. Dash Manager Julio Vinas elected to pinch hit Oester for Yount, and Oester lined the first pitch he saw into center field to score Gac and put Winston on top 6-5.

Thompson (2-1) set down the Red Sox in order in the tenth to end the game, picked up the win. Herold (1-1) was saddled with the loss.

Serafin didn't factor into the decision even after six scoreless innings. He surrendered only three hits, and added to a spectacular effort from Dash starters in the series. Hector Santiago, Cameron Bayne and Serafin combined to throw 19 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on eight hits against Salem.

Notes:

The sweep for Winston-Salem in Salem was the teams first since June 29 - July 1, 2006, when Winston-Salem was the Warthogs and Salem was the Avalanche... Oester had two hits in his last 20 at-bats before the single in the tenth inning.

The Dash return home Monday, May 16 to open up a seven-game home stand against Myrtle Beach and Salem.
