Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes

May 15, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ALL TIED UP: As the Pelicans were putting the finishing touches on Saturday's 6-0 win, they got a little help from the Winston-Salem Dash. Down 4-2 in the ninth, Jared Mitchell's two-run homer tied the game before Luis Sierra won it in the tenth with a solo homer as the Dash came back to beat the Salem Red Sox 5-4. When Johan Yan recorded the final out for the Pelicans last night, the Pelicans moved into a tie with the Red Sox for first-place in the Carolina League's Southern Division. The Birds had spent the past 21 days in second place. They were last atop the league on April 23 when they were tied with Salem at 11-4.

ROSS IS A BOSS: Last night's win was Robbie Ross's fifth of the season, making him the first Carolina League pitcher to reach that mark. He was also the first to get to four wins when he beat Salem on Sunday. Red Sox lefty Chris Hernandez won his fourth game on Thursday to equal Ross, but Robbie took sole possession of the league lead back last night.

BOOM AND POUND WHEN I SHUT ‘EM DOWN: Last night's shutout win was the Pelicans' sixth of the season, and three of their past four wins have been shutouts. The Birds whitewashed the Kinston Indians in both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday, 6-0 and 2-0. The other three shutouts were April 22 at Kinston (10-0), April 25 vs. Potomac (2-0), and May 4 at Potomac (3-0). Myrtle Beach has thrown more than any other Carolina League team, Kinston has thrown five. The Pelicans have been on the wrong side of a shutout only once, the Wilmington Blue Rocks are the only club in the circuit that has avoided being held without a run in a game this season.

A GOOD YEAR IN RUBBER GAMES: The Pelicans bounced back from Friday's loss with a 6-0 win on Saturday to even up the three-game series and set up a rubber game for Sunday afternoon. The Pelicans are 3-1 in the deciding game of a three-game set. In the last two instances, on May 1 against Frederick and on May 4 in Potomac, the Birds lost the opener before coming back to win the final two games to take the series. Myrtle Beach will try to pull the same trick in the series finale today against Lynchburg.
