Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - After winning their first five series at BB&T Coastal Field, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped the sixth to the team with the worst record in the Carolina League. Thanks to a Joey Terdoslavich two-run homer in the sixth, the Birds suffered a disappointing 5-3 loss to Lynchburg in the deciding game of their three-game set in front of 5,188.

Wilfredo Boscan, in his first start as a Pelican after two relief outings, had allowed three runs in the first but had settled in with four scoreless innings going into the sixth. Phil Gosselin singled to start the frame before Terdoslavich hit a fly ball to left center that carried in the wind and hit

Boscan (0-1) had a rough first inning. He allowed three runs on four hits in the frame, including a two-run single by Barrett Kleinknecht and an RBI double by Jace Whitmer. Boscan gave up five runs on seven hits in six innings, he walked one, hit one and struck out two.

Down 3-0 before even coming to bat in the first, the Pelicans came back quickly against starter Dimasther Delgado to tie the game with a pair of home runs. Jared Prince belted a two-run homer in the second and Mike Olt tied it with a solo shot in the third.

Delgado (4-3) went six innings, allowing just those three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three.

The Pelicans had their chances offensively, but other than the two early long balls they could not get the big hit. With two on and nobody out in the sixth down 5-3, David Paisano tried to sacrifice the runners over. Delgado quickly came off the mound to get it and threw for the force out at third on a questionable call by base umpire Mike Walsh.

Instead of loading the bases with no outs, the Pelicans had first and second with one down and couldn't rally. Prince and new catcher Brett Nicholas grounded out to end the threat.

Jared Hoying and Mike Olt grounded into inning-ending double plays in the seventh and eighth, respectively, against reliever Jeremy Haynes. Eliecer Cardenas worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save for Lynchburg.

Joe Ortiz came on for Boscan and did not allow a run in the seventh and eighth, extending his scoreless innings streak to 17. The lefty has not allowed a run since April 12.

Lynchburg continues their road trip in Kinston on Monday. The Pelicans will hit the road as well as they head to Winston-Salem for a four-game series against the Dash starting Monday night. Joe Wieland goes for the Pelicans against right-hander Terry Doyle with first pitch at BB&T Ballpark scheduled for 7:00 p.m. After finishing the road trip next weekend in Wilmington, the Birds return home on May 24 to face the Salem Red Sox. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
