Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 20, 2015) - Matt Heidenreich gave up just one run over five strong innings, and Cleuluis Rondon smacked a two-run home run to help snap the Dash's five-game losing skid in Winston-Salem's 5-1 victory Tuesday over the Carolina Mudcats at BB&T Ballpark.
Heidenreich (2-0) kicked off his outing by snaring two straight Carolina liners right back to the mound to start the game. The right-hander scattered five hits, yielding only one run without walking a batter in five innings to earn the win, which was the Dash's first at BB&T Ballpark since a 9-4 triumph over Salem on August 20, 2014.
Winston-Salem (4-8) immediately gave Heidenreich some breathing room in the bottom of the first. Jake Peter walked, moved to third on Trey Michalczewski's single and came home to score the game's first run on a wild pitch by Carolina starter Yean Carlos Gil (0-3). The southpaw then fanned Keon Barnum, but the ball got by Mudcats catcher Jose Briceno, which moved Michalczewski from second to third. Nick Basto followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Michalczewski and make it 2-0 Dash.
The Dash added to their lead in the very next frame. After a Rondon double with one out, Keenyn Walker ripped a liner to center to score the Winston-Salem shortstop and put the Dash up 3-0.
With the same score in the bottom of the fourth, Winston-Salem native Chris Jacobs singled with one out against Gil for his first career hit at BB&T Ballpark. Rondon, the next batter, smashed a high Gil pitch over the wall in left field for his first home run of the year, giving the Dash a 5-0 advantage.
Gil took the loss for Carolina, surrendering five runs, four earned, on six hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
The Mudcats scored a run against Heidenreich in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1, but the Winston-Salem bullpen took over from there. Andre Wheeler, Brian Clark and Tyler Barnette pitched the final four innings, yielding just one hit without letting in a run.
The rubber game of this three-game set comes tomorrow as Winston-Salem's James Dykstra (2-0, 0.00 ERA) opposes Carolina's Lucas Sims (1-1, 7.56 ERA). Wednesday marks Dykstra's first outing since tossing a no-hitter last week at Potomac. Pregame coverage is available on wsdash.com/broadcast at 10:45 a.m. and the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
