Frederick Keys News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. -The Lynchburg Hillcats used a three-run triple by Eric Haase to take control of the game, while the Frederick Keys were held to only six hits in a 4-1 defeat on Tuesday night at City Stadium. On the game, the Keys finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position to drop to 8-5 on the season, while the Hillcats improve to 4-9.
After surrendering just one hit over his first five innings, David Hess loaded the bases in the sixth. Ivan Castillo and Clint Frazier singled to begin the inning, before the Keys starter stuck out Paul Hendrix and got a fly out from Bradley Zimmer. Castillo advanced on the flyball to set up men at the corners for Nellie Rodriguez. The Midwest League leader in home runs in 2014, Rodriguez jumped ahead in the count 3-1, before earning a walk on a close pitch.
That ended Hess' night, with Keys manager Orlando Gomez turning to Dennis Torres. Facing Haase, Torres would misfire with a fastball which Haase drove to the left-center alley clearing the bases. Haase finished the game 2-for-4.
Lynchburg added a run in the seventh, after James Roberts reached on a one-out error by Keys third baseman Drew Dosch. Roberts advanced to second on a stolen base, and moved to third on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, a Clint Frazier infield single brought him home.
Frederick's best scoring chance came in the ninth. After working a full count, Brenden Webb coaxed a walk from Benny Suarez. Dosch then received a four-pitch free ride, prompting Hillcats manager Mark Budzinski to go back to his bullpen. Turning to Casey Weathers, the minor league veteran walked Chance Sisco to load up the bases for Jeff Kemp. Weathers quickly turned the page, getting a strike out, before getting pinch-hitter Trey Mancini to groundout to short to end the game.
The Keys lone run of the night came in the third off Lynchburg starter Adam Plutko. Johnny Ruettiger opened the inning with an infield single, stole second and moved up an additional 90-feet on a base knock by Adrian Marin. One batter later, Nathans added a sac-fly to center to bring in Ruettiger.
On the hill, Hess (0-1) suffered the loss despite a fine outing. Working a career-high 5.2 innings, the right-hander gave up three runs on three hits to go along with two walks. He also set a new career-high with seven strikeouts. Robbie Aviles (1-1) got picked up the win for the Hillcats tossing two scoreless innings of one-hit baseball and Weathers earned the save after getting the final two outs in the ninth.
On Wednesday, the Keys close out their seven-game roadtrip when they wrap up their three-game set with the Hillcats. Lefty Luis Gonzalez (1-0, 2.61) gets the ball for the Keys and will be countered by Hillcats right-hander Mitch Brown (0-1, 5.59). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15. Frederick returns home on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. when the Wilmington Blue Rocks come to town. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
