Carolina Mudcats News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Yean Carlos Gil allowed four earned runs and five total over five innings and suffered his third straight loss as the Dash defeated the Mudcats 5-1 at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem on Tuesday night. The Dash victory evened the series at 1-1, the finale is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at BB&T Ballpark.

Gil (0-3, 3.94) allowed two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the fourth. Dash (4-8) starter Matt Heidenreich (2-0, 1.64) earned the win after holding the Mudcats (6-5) to just one run over five innings pitched.

The first inning was especially troubling for Gil as the lefty issued his first walk of the season and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

The first started with a groundout, but then Gil walked second baseman Jake Peter to set up Trey Michalczewski and the Dash offense. Michalczewski moved Peter to third with a single to right and a wild pitch lost by Gil allowed Peter to score. Michalczewski went to second on the wild pitch and moved to third when, despite striking out, Keon Barnum would reach on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly moments later by Nick Basto brought in Michalczewski and the Dash took a 2-0 lead.

The Dash added one more to their lead in the second when Cleuluis Rondon reached on a double off Gil and later scored on a single to center by Keenyn Walker. Gil allowed three runs, including two earned runs over the first two innings. In the fourth the Dash would add two more runs against him when Rondon hit a two-run home run to left. Rondon was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Dash.

In all, Gil allowed five runs, four earned, over five innings pitched. He walked two, struck out two and gave up a home run in the loss. The loss was his third straight and his first on the road this season.

The Mudcats were held to just one run over five innings by Heidenreich and failed to provide Gil with more than one run of support for the third straight time. Heidenreich allowed just one run and scattered five hits over five innings and earned the victory.

Connor Lien scored the only Carolina run in the game after doubling and scoring in the fifth. Lien was driven in by Johan Camargo and his RBI single to left-center of Heidenreich in the inning. The Mudcats collected three straight hits in the fifth, but managed just one run.

Relievers Blair Walters and Tyler Jones followed after Gil departed before the sixth. Walters struck out three over two scoreless innings. Jones pitched a scoreless ninth and has not allowed a run over four appearances this season.

Like Gil, Heidenreich left after the fifth and was replaced by Andre Wheeler. Wheeler walked a batter in the sixth and allowed a hit in the sixth, but escaped both innings without allowing a run. He struck out two and kept the Mudcats scoreless over two full innings.

Left-hander Brian Clark also appeared in the game for the Dash. He walked three in the eighth, but escaped the inning without allowing a run. Tyler Barnette pitched the ninth. He allowed a double to Levi Hyams, but pitched a scoreless frame to end the game. The last out was recorded at third when Hyams attempted to move there on a wild pitch.

The Mudcats will send right-hander Lucas Sims to the mound for the game three start on Wednesday morning at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem. Sims (1-1, 7.56) will look to lead his club to a victory in the rubber match of the series and starts opposite Winston-Salem's Jake Dykstra. Dykstra (2-0, 0.00) last pitched on April 15 where he no-hit the Potomac Nationals in a seven inning game. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Winston-Salem.

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The 2015 "Braves New World" season is the first for the Mudcats as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and their fourth straight in the historic Carolina League.
