Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Luis Basabe crushed his team-leading eighth home run of the season, but the Dash fell 9-4 against Salem on Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark.
Salem (27-28) jumped out to an early 2-0 in the first against Jimmy Lambert (3-6). Bobby Dalbec came to the plate with a runner on second and two outs and blasted a line drive, two-run home run to right field. It was Dalbec's league-leading 13th home run of the season.
Winston-Salem (33-26) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first against Red Sox starter Jake Thompson (3-3). After Mitch Roman walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, Blake Rutherford brought him home with a two-out double to make it a 2-1 game. Rutherford finished the game 3-for-4, collecting his 11th double and team-leading 35th RBI in the process.
But the Red Sox extended their lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run single from Santiago Espinal. He lined one into left field with runners on second and third and two outs.
Salem added four more in the third to break the game open. After C.J. Chatham led off the frame with a triple, Lambert issued walks to Bobby Dalbec and Tyler Hill to load the bases. Jorden Wren brough a run in with an RBI single, and Chris Madera later followed with a bases-clearing double, giving the Red Sox an 8-1 advantage.
Drew Hasler kept the Red Sox offense at bay over the next three innings, allowing just two hits.
Luis Basabe smacked his home run in the bottom sixth. With the bases empty and one out, the Venezuelan outfielder launched Thompson's 2-0 onto the home run porch beyond the right field fence for his eighth home run of the year.
Salem brought around its final run of the night against Blake Hickman in the eighth, when Espinal drove in this third run of the game with a single in a 3-for-5 effort.
Winston-Salem plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to finish the scoring. After Rutherford and Call started the inning with back-to-back singles, Rutherford crossed the plate on back-to-back groundouts. Then, Call scampered home on a wild pitch from reliever Hunter Smith to make it 9-4.
Winston-Salem completes its series with the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Left-hander Bernardo Flores (4-3, 2.69 ERA) starts for the Dash against Red Sox right-hander Bryan Mata (3-2, 3.75 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can listen live on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
The Dash's series finale and final game of the homestand is a Lowes Food Thirsty Thursday, featuring select beers for $1 through the seventh inning. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
