TONIGHT: The Mudcats continue a six game home stand tonight with the game two of a three game series versus the Down East Wood Ducks at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.
ICYMI: Mario Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a game-tying home run and Joantgel Segovia went 2-for-3 with a triple in his Mudcats debut, but Down East's Franklin Rollin broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth with a go-ahead homer as the Wood Ducks defeated the Mudcats 6-4 on Tuesday night.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Joantgel Segovia went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in Mudcats debut last night. Segovia was recently promoted to the Mudcats from Low-A Wisconsin where he hit .347/.397/.441 with 70 hits, 25 runs, 24 RBI and a .838 OPS over 50 games with the Timber Rattlers... Mario Feliciano went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in his first home game of the season with the Mudcats last night.
VS. DEWD: Tonight's game is the second of a three game series between the Mudcats and Wood Ducks at Five County Stadium. It is also the 15th of 23 total games between the two teams this season. The Wood Ducks lead the overall season series 9-5; with six of those victories coming at Grainger Stadium where the Wood Ducks are 6-0 against Carolina.
STARTING OFF: RHP Marcos Diplan has the start for the Mudcats tonight against the Wood Ducks. Diplan is coming off his best start of the season on May 31 where he totaled a season high 10 strikeouts over 5.2 scoreless innings against the Hillcats. Diplan is currently 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA over 11 starts and has totaled 52 strikeouts, 32 walks and a .258 average against this season. He is also 1-1 with a 1.09 ERA over his last five starts (24.2 IP, 15 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 14 BB, 31 SO)... RHP Edgar Arredondo starts opposite Diplan tonight and enters at 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA this season. Arredondo has also totaled 55 strikeouts, 10 walks and a .232 average against over nine starts and 48.1 innings this season. He last pitched on May 29 vs. Buies Creek where he suffered a loss after allowing a season high seven runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.85). Roegner is also tied for 2nd in wins (6) and 2nd innings pitched (63.1)... SS Luis Aviles Jr. is currently tied for 2nd in the CL in stolen bases (14)... INF Ronnie Gideon and INF/OF Tucker Neuhaus are both tied for the CL lead in most strikeouts (72)... RHP Marcos Diplan is currently 4th in the CL in most walks (32)... RHP Luke Barker is tied for 3rd in the CL in lowest batting average (.161) and 2nd in fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (7.33).
STINGY MAY: Carolina pitchers combined to pitch to a Carolina League best 2.65 ERA in May (258.1 IP, 105 BB, 255 SO, .225 AVG). They also went 16-13 in May, while the offense totaled 20 home runs, 4.48 runs/game and a .245 average (.702 OPS).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .238 with runners on base. The Mudcats are also tied for 8th in the CL when batting with runners in scoring position (.248) and 6th when batting with RISP/2-outs (.223) this season. They have additionally struck out a league high 240 times when batting with runners on base.
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently 18-26 and own a Carolina League Southern Division worst .409 percentage in games against their own division this season. The Mudcats are also currently tied with the Wilmington Blue Rocks for the CL's worst in-division winning percentage (.409).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (31) and is 2nd in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.544) for catchers with at least 30 attempts against in all of MiLB... He totaled 18 CS (.450) during his first season with the AZL Brewers in 2015. He then totaled 54 CS (.443) in 2016 with Wisconsin and 31 CS (.556) last season with Carolina.
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 118 more strikeouts than hits (563 SO, 445 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
AWARDS SZN: Keston Hiura was named the Carolina League's Player of the Month for the month of May on June 5 by Minor League Baseball. Hiura was also named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for May by Milwaukee on June 4... Carolina has also had three players earn CL Weekly Player/Pitcher of the Week awards this season; Ryan Aguilar - April 16-22, Weston Wilson - April 23-29 and Cam Roegner - May 7-13.
