Former Keys Catcher Wynns Makes MLB Debut

FREDERICK, MD - Former Frederick Keys catcher, Austin Wynns, made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. The 161st former Key to reach the big leagues, Wynns is the second player with Frederick ties to make his MLB debut this season. Former Keys pitcher, David Hess, became the first to do so in mid-May.

Wynns, 27, went 1-for-3 while catching Alex Cobb as the Orioles defeated the New York Mets 2-1. Hitting for the first time in the top of the second, Wynns hit a line drive single to left off Jason Vargas for his first MLB hit.

Added to the Orioles 40-man roster last November, Wynns was placed on the active roster on Tuesday after arriving in Baltimore on Sunday. Before joining the Orioles, the California native was slashing .257/.314/.404 with four home runs, 16 RBIs, four doubles and 18 runs scored in 32 games. Wynns was hitting .439 (18-for-41) against left-handed pitching.

Spending parts of three seasons in Frederick (2014-16) he batted .285/.348/.403 in 130 games with eight home runs, 52 RBIs, 27 doubles and 47 runs scored. In 2015, he shared catching duties with Chance Sisco, who is expected to platoon with Wynns behind the plate in Baltimore.

Selected by the O's in the 10th round of the 2013 draft, Wynns played his college baseball at Fresno State.

Frederick plays the middle game of its three-game series against the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium. Left-hander Alex Wells (3-3, 3.69) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Nationals left-hander Matthew Crownover (2-4, 6.29). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.

The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Monday, June 11 when the Lynchburg Hillcats and Down East Wood Ducks come to town for the final first half homestand.
