Late Night Disappointment:: Last night the Dash dropped its first home game of the season, falling to Kinston 5-2 in 11 innings. Winston-Salem built an early 2-0 lead, but the K-Tribe tied the contest with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. After both teams squandered late scoring chances, the Indians finally broke through in the top of the 11th getting to reliever Orlando Santos for three runs to put away the ballgame. It was the second time the Dash has lost an extra-innings game to the Indians, as the team also lost to the K-Tribe on opening night in ten innings. Saturday's game was the longest of the year for the Dash in both innings and time of game (three hours, 35 minutes). Today Winston-Salem looks to take the rubber game of the series. The Dash beat the Indians in a rubber game last Sunday at Grainger Stadium.
Strikeout City: Hector Santiago led the Dash pitching staff with a strikeout assault against the K-Tribe. Santiago, who set a career-high with seven strikeouts against the Indians last Sunday, set a new career-high last night with 11 in his second start of the season. He struck out the side in the first and fourth innings and now leads the Carolina league with 18 K's on the season. Santiago pitched five shutout innings while the Winston staff continued what he started when it came to disposing Kinston batters. The Dash set a new season-high with 19 strikeouts as Brandon Kloess (1), Taylor Thompson (5), and Orlando Santos (2) combined for eight. Winston vaulted to third in the league in strikeouts and have posted double-digit strikeout totals in all five games against the K-Tribe (66 K's this season). The Indians hitters lead the league in strikeouts with 89.
Dharma Initiative: Baserunners on both teams must have felt lost last night as the Indians (15) and Dash (9) combined to strand 24 men on base. Winston-Salem had a particularly difficult time driving in runners, going 2 for 15 with men on base on the night.
Indian Takers: Last night's win by the K-Tribe was a rare one for the visitors. Kinston captured just its second victory in the city of Winston-Salem in its last 23 games here. In 2009, Kinston won the first game it played at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park, but lost its last nine. The Indians lost eight in a row at BB&T Ballpark before picking up their first win at the new yard on July 27 of last year. The 17-game losing streak in Winston-Salem spanned nearly 14 months; 11 of those Dash wins were by just one run. The K-Tribe has not won consecutive games in Winston-Salem since August 25-27 of 2008.
Allied Bombing: Ian Gac's incredible start to the season continued on Friday night with a solo home run in the sixth inning that tied the game at two. All four of Gac's home runs have either tied the game or pushed Winston-Salem into the lead. He leads the Carolina League in homers and is second to Potomac's Steven Souza with nine RBI. Gac is on pace to hit 80 home runs and collect 180 RBI if he continues his current pace.
Homeward Bound: After a six-game road trip to start the season, the Dash finishes the season's first home stand at BB&T Ballpark against the Kinston Indians. Last year, Winston-Salem went a league-best 47-22 at home, good for the second-best record among all full-season minor league teams. BB&T Ballpark also won the award for "Ballpark of the Year" from BaseballParks.com, beating out the Minnesota Twins' Target Field.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Giovanni Soto (0-1, 3.18) makes his second start of the season and his first against Winston-Salem. In his Advanced-A debut last Monday, Soto lost to Wilmington but pitched very well, allowing two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings, striking out eight and walking only one. Soto is in his first full season with the Indians organization after Cleveland acquired him last July 28 in a trade that sent 3B Jhonny Peralta to Detroit. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native spent all of 2010 in the Midwest League, splitting time with West Michigan, where he tossed two complete game shutouts, and Lake County. In his league debut, he struck out ten batters over five innings, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk. He also had a nine-strikeout game later in the season for the Captains. Overall, he went 9-8 in 22 starts with a 2.93 ERA and 107K/36BB in 113.2 innings. Slender, raw, young, and promising are all adjectives that have been used to describe Soto. The lefty stands 6'2" 180 lbs. and won't turn 20 until May 18. After getting drafted in the 21st round in 2009 out of high school, Soto was named the GCL Tigers "Tiger of the Year" after posting a 4-0 record and 1.18 ERA in 13 games, six starts. His pitch repertoire includes a fastball, sinker, curveball, cutter, and changeup.
