Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
One of the stories of the weekend was the unearned runs Lynchburg gave up. That came to a head in the third inning, when Myrtle Beach scored six unearned en route to an 8-2 win over the Hillcats Sunday afternoon.
With runners on second and third in the third inning, Lynchburg starter Cory Rasmus seemed to get out of the inning by inducing a soft grounder from Ryan Strousborger to shortstop Matt Weaver. However, Weaver overthrew first base, allowing two runs to score. Chris McGuiness followed with an RBI double, and then Michael Olt hit his third home run of the season. A hit by pitch and double by Zach Zaneski made the score 6-0, all unearned for Rasmus (0-2).
Zaneski picked up his second RBI of the game in the fifth, singling home Olt to extend the lead to seven. The run was credited to Rasmus, who left the game giving up seven runs, but just one earned, in four innings pitched, and recorded eight strikeouts.
Zaneski would strike once more in the seventh, poking a solo home run over the right field wall. The home run, off of Matt Crim, was the first run Crim gave up this year in three appearances.
Despite having numerous chances with runners in scoring position, the Hillcats wouldn't score until the eighth inning, when Joe Leonard picked up two RBIs with a single. That was all they would score, and the Pelicans completed the sweep, the second sweep in a row the Hillcats have suffered, and Lynchburg lost their seventh straight game.
Robbie Ross (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for the Pelicans, throwing six scoreless innings. The Pelicans improved to 6-3 while Lynchburg fell to 1-7.
The Hillcats start a three-game split home/away series with Salem on Monday. They will host the Red Sox on Monday and Tuesday and travel to Salem on Wednesday. The Hillcats are 0-3 against the Red Sox this season.
On Monday, righty Willie Kempf (0-0) will pitch for Lynchburg, while righty Ryan Pressly (1-0) will be on the mound for Salem. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m, with gates opening at 5:00.
If you can't make it to the game in person, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 5:40. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
