Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (17-19) vs. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (24-13)
RHP Myles Jaye (first start) vs. RHP Luke Jackson (4-1, 1.72 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, NC)
BLOUGH, HERBEK SHINE IN 7-0 VICTORY The Dash salvaged the finale of their four-game set at Potomac with a 7-0 win Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem starter Bryan Blough scattered five hits in seven scoreless innings, and his eight strikeouts were one shy of a career best. David Herbek, who only played because of Jeremy Farrell's ejection in the first inning, drove in three runs, which doubled his 2013 RBI total to six. Winston scored as many runs Monday as it did during the first three games of the wraparound weekend set.
SHUTOUT CITY Winston-Salem recorded its league-leading fifth shutout victory of 2013 against the P-Nats Monday night. The Dash have earned five of the 15 shutouts in the Carolina League thus far this season. Besides the Dash, only Myrtle Beach and Potomac (three apiece) have more than one blanking to their credit. Winston paced the circuit with 15 shutouts a year ago.
LIMITING THE SWEEPS Thanks to Monday's convincing victory, Winston-Salem avoided its first four-game series sweep since Myrtle Beach swept the Warthogs from June 2-5 of 2008. In the Dash era (2009-present), Winston-Salem has only suffered eight sweeps, with the only one this season coming at Carolina from April 5-7.
UPHILL CLIMB Entering this three-game series with first-place Myrtle Beach, the Dash face a 6.5-game deficit in the Southern Division's first half standings. This marks the largest deficit for the Dash in the division since finishing the first half of the 2011 season 8.5 games back of Myrtle Beach. During the second half of the 2012 campaign, Winston-Salem fell six games behind the Pelicans through 14 games, but the Dash finished the season with a 38-17 spurt to win the second half division crown. This three-game set marks the final meeting between the Dash and Pelicans during the first half of the season.
AGENT JAYE Right-hander Myles Jaye will make his High-A debut for the Dash tonight after the White Sox announced his promotion to Winston-Salem earlier this afternoon. In seven starts with Low-A Kannapolis earlier this season, Jaye was 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA after limping to a 6.04 ERA in 17 starts with the Intimidators in 2012. Chicago acquired Jaye and fellow righty Daniel Webb, who started the season with the Dash before a promotion to Double-A on May 4, for right-hander Jason Frasor on January 1, 2012. The Sox announced three other moves today, all of which involved right-handed hurlers. Ryan Buch has been assigned to Winston-Salem from Double-A Birmingham, while Stew Brase is heading to Low-A Kannapolis. The White Sox also released Justin Collop.
HEISLER'S ON-BASE STREAK Dating back to last season, Winston-Salem outfielder Adam Heisler has reached base in 38 straight games, which is the second-longest current streak in Minor League Baseball. Jamal Austin of High Desert (High-A, Seattle) has reached safely in 45 straight contests dating back to late last season.
MORE ON THE STREAK Heisler reached in his final three games of 2012 while with rookie-level Great Falls before finding his way on base in all 35 games this year (19 with Low-A Kannapolis and 16 with Winston-Salem). Heisler has hit safely in 29 of these 38 games, during which he owns a .299 average (44-for-147) with 16 RBIs and 27 runs scored.
MILLIONTH FAN EXPECTED THURSDAY The Dash anticipate to welcome the one millionth fan in BB&T Ballpark's history on Thursday night. BB&T Ballpark will reach this milestone quicker than any facility in High-A baseball. Since the ballpark opened in April of 2010, a total of 994,090 fans have attended a Dash game at BB&T Ballpark, which leads High-A baseball during that span.
