Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Woodbridge, VA - The Wilmington Blue Rocks got another strong start from Aaron Brooks and more timely production from their offense on the way to a 7-3 series-opening win over the Potomac Nationals on Tuesday at Pfitzner Stadium. Brooks earned his first victory of the season by allowing just three runs over 6.2 frames, while the Blue Crew bats pounded 13 hits and scored runs in four of their final six trips to the plate.
Brooks posted goose eggs in six out of the seven innings he took the mound. The right-hander pitched to contact, striking out just one batter, but he also threw strikes, walking only a pair. He was touched up for a three-run fifth, but even in that frame, only Jason Martinson's two-run double was hit hard.
Meanwhile the Wilmington offense hit plenty of balls hard all night long. Early in the contest, it did not lead to runs. The Rocks loaded the bases in the first with only one out, but failed to score. They flew out to the warning track three times over the next two frames and went 0-for-their-first-6 with runners in scoring position. Jared Schlehuber's solo homer in the fourth got Wilmington on the board, but Potomac still had a 3-1 lead entering the sixth.
Again Wilmington loaded the bases, this time with no outs, but Kenny Swab assured a different result by sending an opposite-field single to right that brought the Blue Crew to within a single score. Tyler Chism followed with a 6-4-3 double-play grounder that slowed the Rocks' momentum, but still managed to tie the game, as Jack Lopez scored. Justin Trapp picked Chism up by following with a two-out single to center that plated Alex Hudak and put Wilmington ahead to stay.
The Rocks added to their edge in the seventh courtesy of a two-run double by Hudak, while Swabb drove in another score with his second RBI single of the night in the top of the ninth.
Cody Fassold came out of the Blue Crew bullpen to get the final seven outs of the game, which earned the righty-reliever his first save of the season.
The Rocks continue their three-game series in Potomac on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Spencer Patton (3-1, 1.88) makes a spot-start for Wilmington against P-Nats righty A.J. Cole (1-1, 3.65).
