Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Mike Augliera remained undefeated by scattering three hits over six shutout innings, and the Salem Red Sox bested the Carolina Mudcats 2-1 on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (13-25) lost their fifth straight game, and eighth in a row at home.
Salem snapped a six-game losing streak, and improved to 16-20 behind the stellar outing from Augliera (4-0). The right-hand fanned four without a walk, and never allowed a base runner past first. Nate Striz got the final out to earn his second save.
Cody Anderson (4-2) had a strong outing for Carolina, dealing his fourth straight quality outing. Salem managed a run on four hits against the right-hander. Anderson struck out a season-high nine batters without a walk.
The Sox opened the scoring in the second when Keury De La Cruz doubled to left. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Blake Swihart brought him home with a single to center.
Augliera set down the first 10 batters he faced before Francisco Lindor lined a single over third.
Matt Gedman launched his first Carolina League home run off Owen Dew in the eighth for a 2-0 lead.
The Mudcats mounted one last charge in the ninth. With two out, Jordan Smith tripled to left field when Matty Johnson lost his footing running after the ball. Charlie Valerio then grounded a single off that caromed off the second base bag to score Smith.
With Valerio on, Salem went to the bullpen for Striz. The right-hander struck out Luigi Rodriguez to end the game.
Carolina continues their series at home with the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday night, May 15th. The series wraps up on Thursday night with "Thirsty Thursday" presented by Natty Greene's.
