WILMINGTON DOWNS DASH IN 14TH
Winston-Salem's losing streak reached five due to Wilmington's 3-2, 14-inning win on Tuesday at Frawley Stadium. Austin Bailey's sacrifice fly in the ninth pushed across an unearned run and forced extra innings. With two down and the bases clean in the 14th, Winston-Salem reliever Jacob Morris issued a hit by pitch and walk, setting the scene for Humberto Arteaga. The All-Star rolled a base hit just past the glove of shortstop Cleuluis Rondon to propel the Blue Rocks past the Dash. Wilmington pitching retired the final 15 Dash hitters in order.
ONE OF THE LONGEST GAMES
Tuesday's middle match was the longest game, in innings, for Winston-Salem this year. In the Dash era (2009-present), only one game has required more innings, a 20-inning Dash victory over Myrtle Beach on May 19, 2010, at BB&T Ballpark. It also marked the club's first extra-frame road game since Opening Night, which is the only Dash contest that has spanned a longer period of time (4:59) than the Dash's 14-inning loss on Tuesday night (3:45).
LOWRY-ING THE ERA
Tuesday starter Thad Lowry surrendered just one run in seven strong innings en route to a tough-luck no decision. In his three outings over 20.0 innings this month, Lowry boasts a 1.35 earned run average (4R/3ER) after entering June with a 4.75 ERA. His overall mark has dropped almost a full run (3.82), while he has recorded back-to-back seven-inning starts after notching one in his first 11 efforts. Wednesday hurler Jordan Stephens is on a similar uptick as he searches for his third straight quality start.
PUSH PAST THREE
For the 29th time this season, Winston-Salem scored three runs or less in a game on Tuesday. The Dash are 2-27 (.069) in those games, while they own a 23-13 (.639) record when plating four or more runs. Winston-Salem is seventh in the Carolina League in runs per game (3.94).
LOW FIVE
Winston-Salem is in the midst of its fourth losing streak of five or more games this season. The Dash have followed up a season-long four-game win streak with five consecutive losses since Friday. The Dash have not dropped more than five in a row since a seven-game slide from August 21-27 of 2014. Since becoming the Dash in 2009, Winston had never recorded more than three skids of five-plus games until this season. In fact, the first seven years of the Dash era featured only nine slides of five or more games, with three apiece coming in 2011 and 2014.
HUNTING AT THE TOP
Outfielder Hunter Jones is one of two men in the Carolina League who has played all of his team's games, joining Myrtle Beach's Yasiel Balaguert. Jones paces the CL in games (65) and at-bats (257), while he stands tied for first in triples (7), tied for second in hits (75), fourth in stolen bases (26), tied for fourth in runs (46) and sixth in average (.291). Jones is one of two Dash players heading to next week's All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore, Calif. (P Matt Cooper).
HEADING HOME
Following Wednesday's finale in Wilmington, the Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a four-game series with Salem to conclude the first half. The Red Sox finished off a first-half Southern Division title on Monday for the first time since 1988. Winston is just 1-7 at home against Salem. The opener is a Throwback Thursday, presented by Parr Investments, and the club will wear Warthogs jerseys for the second time. Winston-Salem lost to the Frederick Keys by a score of 9-4 in the first Warthogs night on May 26.
DASH DOTS
Both Jones and Mason Robbins recorded their team-leading 19th multi-hit games on Tuesday... Robbins (.296) barely edges Jones for the top average on the club, and he places fifth among Carolina League qualifiers...Zach Fish logged his first High-A hit and RBI on Tuesday night.
