Winston-Salem Dash News Release

The Dash's first half hopes are on the line tonight at 6:05 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Myrtle Beach's magic number sits at one with two days left in the half. If Winston-Salem loses tonight or if Myrtle Beach wins one of its two games against Carolina this evening, the Pelicans would win the Southern Division crown here in the first half. Full game notes attached.

WINSTON-SALEM DASH (37-31) at WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (32-36)

RHP Myles Jaye (3-1, 6.42 ERA) vs. LHP Sam Selman (4-5, 5.19 ERA)

6:05 p.m. - Frawley Stadium (Wilmington, DE)

THREE HOMERS TRUMPED LATE RALLY The Dash matched a season high with three home runs in their 6-5 victory over Wilmington on Friday night at Frawley Stadium. Chris Curley, Courtney Hawkins and Adam Heisler hit a solo shot each, while Winston-Salem scored in five different innings. Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, the Blue Rocks pulled within one on a Jared Schlehuber three-run double, but Max Peterson stranded the tying run by striking out Dennis Raben to preserve Winston's 10th one-run win.

HOMERING TO THE TOP Winston-Salem is tied with Frederick for the Carolina League lead in home runs with 60. The Dash, who pace the circuit with 20 long balls thus far in June, went yard three times on Friday for the fifth time this season. Winston has not owned sole possession of the CL lead in dingers since May 26. Three of the top ten home run hitters in the Carolina League are on the Dash's roster: Courtney Hawkins (13, 2nd), Chris Curley (12, 3rd) and Jeremy Farrell (9, T-8th).

ROLLIN' ON THE RIVERFRONT With Friday's one-run victory, Winston-Salem is now 11-1 against Wilmington in 2013. The Dash, who have won eight consecutive games over Wilmington, have outscored the Blue Crew by a score of 58-26 during the season series. Dating back to the start of last season, the Dash have won 26 of their last 32 versus the Rocks. Since June of 2011, Winston is 17-4 against the Blue Crew inside Frawley Stadium, which includes eight straight triumphs dating back to last August.

TWO DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS Both starters Friday continued their recent trend against the opposing team. Bryan Blough earned his third straight win and quality start against the Rocks. In 20 innings versus the Blue Crew, he has allowed just three earned runs (1.35 ERA). However, Kyle Smith, Wilmington's lone All-Star, is 0-3 with a 6.98 ERA against the Dash (15 ER, 19.1 IP). He is 4-0 with a 1.44 ERA in his other nine starts (8 ER, 50.0 IP).

MYRTLE BEACH'S MAGIC NUMBER: ONE With two days remaining in the season's first half, the Dash are two games behind first-place Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division standings. As a result, the Pelicans' magic number sits at one. Myrtle Beach defeated Carolina 10-7 in a slugfest on Friday night. As a result, the Birds now own an eight-game winning streak after dropping 12 of their previous 13 games to fall to 30-28. The Pelicans, who have won 10 straight games over the Muddies, continue their series with a twin bill tonight at 6:05. One win for the Birds in the double dip or a Dash loss in the First State ends Winston's first half playoff hopes.

CURLEY GETS HITS... Dash infielder Chris Curley has hit safely in nine consecutive games dating back to June 9. During this run, Curley is hitting .385 (15-for-39) with three homers and eight RBIs. With a knock Saturday, Curley would become the fifth Winston batter to string together a hitting streak of 10 or more games. Lynchburg is second in that category with three such runs, while no other team has more than two double-digit streaks.

...AND HITS HOMERS Chris Curley, one of four Dash representatives heading to the All-Star Game, will participate in the 2013 Home Run Derby. Curley's only other professional derby came in 2011 as a member of the independent Florence Freedom. He hit three home runs but failed to advance past the first round of the Frontier League's annual event. Last year at BB&T Ballpark, Dash outfielder Brady Shoemaker defeated former Warthog C.J. Retherford in the derby's final round.

DASH DOTS The Dash are six games above .500 for the first time this season...Since his team-high 12-game hitting streak, Joey DeMichele is 0-for-10... Winston-Salem leads the CL with a 10-6 record in one-run contests...Dash starter Myles Jaye has allowed 13 earned runs in his last two outings, which spans just nine and a third frames.
