SALEM, VA - The Lynchburg Hillcats failed to score after the third inning in a 9-2 loss to the Salem Red Sox Saturday night at LewisGale Field inside Salem Memorial Ballpark. Kyle Kubitza and Elmer Reyes each hit solo home runs to provide all the offense. Navery Moore couldn't get through the fourth inning for Lynchburg, suffering his first loss since May 8.

The Hillcats (35-32) got on the board first with the solo home run by Kubitza in the second. It was Kubitza's eighth home run of the season and fourth in his last six games. Kubitza now has at least one RBI in six straight games.

The Red Sox (32-36) tied the game in the bottom of the second. Brandon Jacobs drew a one-out walk then got to third on a double by Blake Swihart before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Henry Ramos.

The tie was snapped quickly by a solo home run on the first pitch of the third inning by Reyes. It was his third home run of the season and second in June. The Hillcats led 2-1.

Then the Red Sox took over, scoring the next eight runs. They scored two in the third on a two-run double by Keury De La Cruz. Three walks by Moore loaded the bases for De La Cruz in the inning. The double put Salem up 3-2 and extended De La Cruz's hitting streak to 15 games, which ties Reyes for the longest streak in the Carolina League this season.

Three more runs came in across in the fourth. Henry Ramos led off with a single then scored when the next batter, Stefan Welch, doubled to right field. Welch scored on a single by Felix Sanchez, who later scored on a double by Garin Cecchini.

That was the end of the night for Moore (7-5), who went 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits with four walks, which matched a season high, and five strikeouts. Mike Augliera (5-4) got the win for Salem with a 5.1-inning effort, allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Hillcats reliever James Hoyt gave up two runs in the sixth on RBI knocks by Deven Marrero and Cecchini. Blake Swihart added a solo home run off John Cornely in the seventh to round out the scoring.

The Hillcats and Red Sox wrap up the first half of the 2013 season with a doubleheader Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1pm at LewisGale Field. A.J. Holland (3-4, 4.43) takes the mound for Lynchburg against Henry Owens (5-2, 2.95) in game one and Blaine Sims (0-1, 6.75) and William Cuevas (2-6, 6.62) in game two.
