Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. (June 15, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash have been eliminated from the race for the first half's Southern Division title after falling 3-2 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday evening at Frawley Stadium. As a result, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans clinch the division title, giving them a birth in the Carolina League playoffs in early September.
The Dash (37-32) trailed Myrtle Beach by as many as seven and a half games during the first half, but Winston-Salem rallied to draw even with the Birds on June 6. However, Myrtle rattled off eight wins in a row before falling in the opener of a twin bill on Saturday night, and this run propelled the Rangers' CL affiliate to its third consecutive playoff berth.
In the bottom of the second, Wilmington (33-36) struck first. Dennis Raben hit his first home run since signing with the Kansas City organization on June 13 to put the Blue Rocks ahead 1-0 against Dash starter Myles Jaye (3-2).
Jaye would fall victim to the long ball again in the third. This time, it was Daniel Mateo who tagged the right-hander for a homer, a two-run blast that put the Blue Crew ahead 3-0.
Winston-Salem would get on the board in the fourth. Courtney Hawkins started the frame by drawing a walk against Sam Selman (5-5), and, after a stolen base and a Josh Richmond single, Hawkins was at third for Martin Medina. Medina hit a sacrifice fly, putting his team on the board.
Hawkins was then at it again in the sixth to help Winston cut the lead to one. The center fielder led the inning off with a single and scampered to third following a stolen base and a throwing error. Rangel Ravelo followed with a groundout that chased Hawkins home.
Selman's evening was over after that sixth frame, and he turned things over to reliever Spencer Patton. Patton surrendered just two hits over three shutout innings to put the Dash away and earn his first save of the year.
In a losing effort, Jaye turned in one of his best High-A outings. He rebounded to toss seven frames after giving up those three runs in the first three. The righty surrendered just four hits in the ballgame, and a pair of walks were the only baserunners he allowed after giving up the Mateo home run.
The Dash wrap up the season's first half Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium as they conclude their four-game set against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. All-Star Chris Bassitt (6-2, 3.54) is scheduled to start for Winston-Salem, while Wilmington will turn to fellow right-hander Tyler Sample (0-2, 1.76). Coverage on wsdash.com begins with the Pregame Dash at 1:20, and first pitch is scheduled for 1:35.
Winston-Salem's next homestand begins on June 24 as the Dash open up a four-game series against the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
