Mudcats Split Pair in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Carolina Mudcats snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans with an 8-2 win before the Pelicans rebounded for a 5-1 triumph in a doubleheader on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field. The Pelicans (39-29) earned the season-series by winning their 11th against Carolina, and clinched the first half Southern Division title in the process.

Michael Goodnight (1-0) earned his first win of the year with three scoreless innings in relief for the Mudcats (22-47) in game one. Nick Martinez (5-4) took the loss for Pelicans, allowing six runs on four hits over 5.2 innings.

Trailing 2-0 after three innings, Carolina plated eight runs over the next three to pull away. Tyler Naquin drove in two on his second hit of the game in the sixth inning. Francisco Lindor stole two bases, and brought in Naquin as part of four runs in the sixth.

Joey Wendle finished with two hits in game one. The Mudcats pilfered a game-high six bases.

Joe Van Meter (2-3) earned the win in game two. The right-hander dealt 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, scattering four hits. Rob Nixon (0-2) made his third start for the Mudcats, but allowed five runs on five hits in only three innings for the loss.

Myrtle Beach scored two runs in the second inning for the lead. Carolina cut the margin to one on a groundout by Lindor, but the Pelicans got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an Edwin Garcia sacrifice fly to center. Myrtle Beach added two more in the fourth for the final margin.

On the night, Lindor swiped three bases to increase his season total to 18. Jordan Smith had two hits in the nightcap.
