THE HILLCATS: Split a doubleheader with the Salem Red Sox last night...RHP Ryan Weber gave up four runs to the Red Sox in the first three innings of game one..He retired 15 of his 1ast 17 batters, but Salem held the Hillats scoreless until seventh and eventually won 4-1...Game was a different story as the Hillcats jumped out to the early lead...OF Robby Hefflinger hit a two-run homer in the first inning setting the tone for a 7-0 Hillcats win...Hefflinger would go deep again and finish the game 4-for-4...RHP Jarett Miller and RHP Billy Bullock combined to shutout the Red Sox...Miller left the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth when Bullock was called from the pen...Bullock stranded all three runners and threw a scoreless seventh...The Hillcats are now 35-31 with three games left in the first half...They have been eliminated from the playoff race, still sitting 4.5 games back...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 4-7 against the Red Sox this season...Salem swept the first series they played in Lynchburg 3-0,w ith one game getting postponed due to rain...The last series in Salem was split 1-1 and the finale was postponed due to rain...Last weekend the two clubs split a pair of doubleheaders in Lynchburg...The 'Cats won the season series 12-8 over the Red Sox last year...They went 7-4 at home against Salem, playing one extra home game because a game in Salem was postponed during a four-game home and home series in which a doubleheader was played in Lynchburg to make up for the Salem rainout...Salem and Lynchburg are closest in vicinity of any two teams in the Carolina League separated by just 57 miles...
DOUBLE VISION: Lynchburg and Salem played their third doubleheader in six days last night...All three have been split...And the home team has won game one each time, with the road team evening things in the night caps...Those are the only doubleheaders the 'Cats have played this season, 3-3 in twin bill play...The Red Sox are 5-6 in doubleheader games...
BLANKING THE SOX: The Salem Red Sox had scored at least one run in each of their first 66 games of the season until RHP Jarett Miller and RHP Billy Bullock blanked them last night...It was just the second shutout of the season for Lynchburg...The first came way back on April 10 against Myrtle Beach at home in a nine innign game...The Red Sox had their share of opportunities to score as Miller and Bullock combined to allow six hits, walk three, and hit a batter in seven innings...Salem stranded nine runners, including the bases loaded in the sixth...
NEW CAREER BEST BEFORE BREAK: OF Robby Hefflinger homered twice in game two last night, giving him 18 home runs on the season surpassing his previous career-best season mark of 16, which he accomplished last year between Lynchburg and Low-A Rome...Two other Hillcats have already surpassed their career-best single season home run totals this year...OF Matt Lipka has four (previous high 2, Lynchburg 2012), and OF Will Skinner has 11 (previous high, 9, Rome 2012)...He currently leads the Carolina League and all Advance-A hitters, and he is tied for third-most in all of Minor League Baseball...In total last night, Hefflinger went 6-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored between both games...He doubled once in addition to the long balls...Raised his batting average from .283 to .299, which ranks seventh in the circuit...
THE BAR HAS BEEN SET: SS Elmer Reyes went 0-for-2 in game one last night and was stranded in the on-deck circle in the Hillcats final at-bats snapping his league-best hitting streak at 15 games...He batted .444 (24-for-54) during this stretch with a home run, eight doubles, four RBI, and seven runs scored...The next best streak belongs to Salem's OF Keury De La Cruz...It is current and sitting at 14 games...He went 2-for-3 in game one and 1-for-4 in game two last night..Tonight he'll try to match Reyes...
RBI STREAK FOR K.K.: 3B Kyle Kubitza has collected at least one RBI in each of his last five games...He has six RBI total during the streak, and a hit and run scored in all but one of the games...During this stretch his 5-for-16 (.313) with a double and three home runs...Following the month of May in which he hit .237, he is currently swinging at a .364 clip in 14 June games, with four home runs, one more than he hit in 48 games in April and May combined...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Mike Augliera was a fifth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2012, is in his first full season in the Boston organization and first season in the Carolina League....The 22-year-old was drafted after his senior season with SUNY Binghamton (Binghamton, NY)...Led the NCAA in strikeout-to-walk ratio his senior season...After being drafted, spent remainder of 2012 with the Lowell Spinners of the New York Penn League and appeared in 15 games, 14 starts, going 1-3 with a 4.42 ERA... He continued his outstanding command from college, striking out 43 and walking only 3...Was 4-0 with a 3.12 ERA going into his eighth start May 19...He is now 4-3 with a 4.76 ERA...Has lost each of his last four starts, and posted an ERA of 7.91 in that span...Only recorded one out June 4 against Winston-Salem giving up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits...Tonight is his third start against the Hillcats...Gave up two run on five hits in 5.1 innings in Lynchburg on April 20...Surrendered four runs, three earned, in a six inning complete game losing effort last Sunday in game one of the doubleheader in Lynchburg...
