DASH WIN 7-2 TO CLINCH SERIES WIN
Behind another strong offensive outing and a scoreless outing from right-hander Lincoln Henzman, Winston-Salem defeated Myrtle Beach 7-2 on Sunday evening at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. After three scoreless innings from Henzman, Drew Hasler allowed a run on three hits to Myrtle Beach in the fourth inning. However, the Dash offense responded against Myrtle Beach starter Bryan Hudson, plating three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Winston-Salem proceeded to add on two more runs in the sixth and extended its lead to 7-2 in the top of the eighth. Right-hander Tyler Johnson allowed one run in the bottom of the ninth but ultimately finished out the 7-2 victory to clinch a series win for the Dash over the Pelicans.
BIG-CITY MOVES
Over the last three games, the Dash pitching staff has allowed just two runs total, after posting two straight shutouts against the Mudcats and Pelicans on Friday and Saturday. Kyle Kubat shut down the Carolina offense in Friday's series finale, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out 10 in five innings of work. Meanwhile, in Saturday's game, righty Blake Battenfield tossed six shutout innings and struck out five to help the Dash to their second straight shutout. Henzman followed suit with three scoreless innings of work on Sunday as the Dash allowed the first two Myrtle Beach runs of the series.
OF LEGAL HITTING AGE
With three position players promoted to Double-A Birmingham after the All-Star Break, the Dash have received great contributions from several members of their offense in the second half:
OF Luis Gonzalez: .303 AVG, 22 runs, 1 HR, 17 RBI; 12 multi-hit efforts in 27 games
C Yermin Mercedes: .333/.402/.494 with 2 HR, 17 RBI & 8 2B
INF Mitch Roman: .320 AVG, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 6 2B
OF Blake Rutherford: .333/.391/.486 with 2 HR, 22 RBI, 6 2B & 2 3B
INF Gavin Sheets: .364 AVG with 2 HR, 19 RBI
CALL HIM CAPTAIN HOOK
Left-hander John Parke will take the mound for Winston-Salem in the series finale with Myrtle Beach. Since being promoted to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis on June 27, Parke is 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA in five starts. A 21st round pick by the White Sox in 2017, Parke played his college ball at the University of South Carolina, where he was teammates with fellow Dash pitcher Tyler Johnson. Parke underwent Tommy John surgery on February 23, 2016, and returned to the mound one year after that, facing off against Kansas State. Parke has expressed his gratitude for the surgery since it occurred, saying "Tommy John, baseball-wise, was the best thing that ever happened to me. My stuff got better, my arm got better and my arm's never sore anymore." More information is available on page 3.
WHAT ARE THEY SO MAD ABOUT?
On Sunday evening, the Dash offense continued its recent success, putting up seven runs on nine hits. The Dash offense has now scored 30 runs in its past three games and outscored opponents 30-2 in those contests. On Friday and Saturday, Winston-Salem tallied a double-digit number of hits in back-to-back games, with 23 on Friday and 11 on Saturday.
A GRAPHIC DISPLAY OF DOMINANCE
The Dash are in the midst of a six-game road trip, with Winston-Salem in the midst of its second leg in Myrtle Beach. The Dash will not have a road trip of more than four games the rest of the year. The Dash have dominated the Southern Division rival Pelicans this season, going 9-2 in 11 games against the High-A affiliate of the Cubs, including two series sweeps.
DASH DOTS
Jhonny Pereda in each of the last two games has a single through the right side, despite a shift and knowing the Dash think he is a pull hitter. Especially, impressive for Winston is they haven't cheated themselves this year, going 61-39.
