Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - The Lynchburg Hillcats are excited to announce that catcher Li-Jen Chu has been named Carolina League Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Chu was selected as the league's top hitter for July 16-22. The selection marks the fifth weekly award for a Hillcats player this season and the first of Chu's career. Lynchburg has now had three weekly player awards over the last five weeks, with Eli Morgan winning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week from June 16-24 and again for July 2-8.
The Taichung, Taiwan native appeared in six games last week, starting four games at catcher and two as the designated hitter. He went a combined 12-for-20 (.600) at the plate with two home runs, six RBI, two doubles and five walks. His week was highlighted by a four-hit game against Wilmington on July 20. Chu reached base four more times on July 22 against Carolina, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double and three walks.
A post-season All-Star last season with Single-A Lake County, Chu is first on the team in slugging percentage (.448) and second in OPS (.804). The right handed hitter is also third on the Hillcats in RBI (38). He leads the team in runners caught stealing with 17.
Signed as an International Free Agent by the Cleveland Indians in 2012, Chu is enjoying a month of July that has seen him hit .400 with four home runs and 13 RBI. He batted .230 during the first two months of the season, before warming up to hit .277 in June prior to going on his current tear.
The 24-year-old is in his first stint at the A-Adv. level. In 2017 with Lake County, Chu set new career highs with 17 home runs and 67 RBI.
The Hillcats conclude their home stand on Monday against the Carolina Mudcats, in the finale of the three-game series. Left-hander Tanner Tully (3-9, 4.76) takes the ball for Lynchburg, opposite of Carolina righty Braden Webb (5-7, 4.14).
